Folks that used to die at 70 of heart disease or diabetes are now living to be 90 due to the miracle of modern drugs. Instead of dying relatively suddenly, people are hanging on and fading away slowly, requiring more financial and human capital to keep them alive. Is this a good thing?

It’s a great thing. Beloved friends and family are around longer and the overall economic impact is positive since more people are spending money the longer they live.

Old people aren't living that much longer than old people 150 years ago. Average age was so much lower then because it was hard to make it to 20.

Considering we lose good people all the time, at an early age, to heart attacks, cancer, etc., and haven't found a cure for shite like alzheimers, I'd say we still have a long way to go.

Well science has developed treatments to mitigate certain conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, etc, but hasn't been able to accomplish the same with certain neurological breakdowns, or the natural aging process for bones, etc. Make sure you let you family know what your wishes are is all I can say.

Yes.

The human machine was not designed for extended life.

There's a reason why in the absence of extraordinary expense and effort, the human body starts going to shite in the 40s.

I had to pick a neighbor up off his floor yesterday. I wouldnt have had to do that if he was born 20 years earlier, b/c he totally would not be here.

Is not eating a shite load of fried food and exercising like 30 minutes a day really extraordinary effort?

We put sick dogs down to end their suffering but we'll sure drag some people along in the last stages of life.

I'm not taking a hard stance, just saying there are some inconsistencies.

The sanitary sewer system has saved far more lives than modern medicine.

Other than vaccines to prevent some contagious diseases, and antibiotics to treat infections modern medicine has few actual cures. As you said there are treatments to mitigate the symptoms and effects of diseases, but you still have the disease, and many of the treatments have their own side effects. When people say a cure for cancer should have been found by now they should consider that cancer is one of the few diseases that can actually be eradicated from the body with current treatments, obviously the problem is the treatments are not always effective.

I'm not the one who down voted you but that's just dumb. The "human machine" was designed to last forever originally.

Watching my Father die a miserable death a year and a half ago, I truly think his life was extended beyond what it should have been. All it did was prolong his suffering.

It really made me think about what measures I will be willing to take when I’m confronted with my own mortality.
