I lived there for five years (2000-2005). For half of that time, I lived in western Sydney; the other half in a small coastal town about three hours south of Sydney.
Sydney was fun at first, but after a year or so you start to get fed up with the crime, traffic, and other general things associated with a big city. It becomes a drag taking public transport to work every day. But that’s just me; I’m just not a fan of big cities. Be ready for culture shock...there are suburbs where you’ll swear you’re in Hanoi, Beirut, Bombay, or Shanghai. Now, the small town...LOVED it. I knocked off work at 4:30, be home by 5:00, take the dogs for a walk to the beach (google Jervis Bay to see where I lived), be home by 6 for supper. Beach all weekend. Fishing is great. Best years of my pre-children life there.
Cost of living is higher, but you make more money. Housing prices anywhere near Sydney are insane. It’s expensive to keep a car legal. On top of insurance, you’ve got yearly registration that can run from a few hundred to a thousand bucks.
Australians are good, friendly people. You know where you stand with them. Great sports atmosphere; I became a fan of Australian rules rugby. Politics there is always a kick. They’re a bit lefty there, but gets more conservative outside of the city. Outdoor life and activities are exceptional. Beautiful beaches. Fishing.
Always plenty to see and do.
Overall, not much different than the United States. One piece of advice that will help endear you to your Aussie mates: before I moved, I learned their history, politics, and sports. Don’t beat your chest and talk about how great America is and we do things this or that way. In other words, don’t be the dumb American tourist. You’ll then just me that “dumb frickin’ Yank.”
The wildlife isn’t a big deal. I never saw any funnel webs or snakes in the wild. Roaches are kind of big and like to fly. Just clap your shoes together a couple of times to knock anything out and wear a good pair of gloves when digging around in the shed and you’ll be alright. Kangaroos are cool but like to commit suicide on the highways and can frick your car up. The birds are the best....kookaburras, cockatoos, crimson rosellas, and galahs everywhere in the wild.
Got specific questions just ask.
EDIT: DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ask for a Fosters. Ask for a VB or Toohey’s. They WILL take you out back of the pub and beat you if you ask for a Fosters.

Lived there for 2 years and absolutely loved it. in my opinion, Australia > America but alas, here I am back in the states. If only I could take my family and friends and relocate everyone there. Really have to think about what’s most important in your life and what you want your future to look like.

I always said Queensland was like the California of Australia. Honestly, though, I’m not sure how to answer your question. Maybe a mix, but really it’s their own unique blend. Aussies are kind of like the rednecks of the British Empire. A mix of beach life with a dose of southern hospitality.

Eh. They stopped sending convicts there in the 1830’s so today’s Aussies are pretty far removed from that status. Most came over long after that. My wife’s family (no pics) didn’t get there until after WWI (fathers side) and WWII (mothers side).

I know a couple Australians if you want me to really ask. But I'll just throw it out there that they all moved here and there are 0 plans of them moving back.
Im starting to get behind the whole mandatory military service thing. Maybe of people got out and saw how reslly good we have it here, they wouldnt bitch so much.

That’s a fair assessment. For example you have to get council permission if you want to put a garden shed up in your yard or want to take a tree out. It can get very nanny state. The socialized medicine isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. You’ll notice the difference.
Look at it this way....if it’s for a few years but you’ll be coming back to the US, go for it. If you grew up there and don’t know the difference, you’d be happy there. But I have no desire to move back there on a permanent basis. I don’t regret my time there but the US is home.

Lived in Melbourne for work ... incredible lifestyle and country.
