You know charcoal comes from wood, right?

Why yes I do, but wood doesn’t have spices that you burn to get flavor into meat or veg. If you want to do that, then try rubbing or brining or sous vide to introduce those flavors throughout the meat. Even smoking only really hits the outside, thus the smoke ring, and it takes time to achieve that. All you’re really doing is wasting money, but hey, that’s why marketing departments exist. It works.

Flavor is why I cook on a smoker instead of a grill.

My wife accidentally bought a bag of the hickory Kingsford charcoal (not the natural wood stuff) last summer when I was grilling some steaks and burgers and it ruined the steaks.

I assume you're talking about the new stuff like the basil or cumin chilli...and after having that hickory shite, I can only imagine that kind of flavored charcoal is fricking awful.

As long as you have good clean hardwood charcoal you are getting all the flavor you need.

People that can tell you the type of wood they smoked with are full of something...

To some degree, like white oak vs. Red oak. I only cook with wood fires on the grill/smoker, and cherry is totally different from oak, which is different from maple, mesquite is its own animal. Just across hickory wood I've had batches that have awesome flavor and some that suck, I assume because there are a billion varieties of hickory and people who sell firewood don't care as much as I do.
