re: Has anyone heard about Ivermectin resistance in our area?

My vet mentioned it. I have a few large dogs and yearly proheart has gotten expensive, plus as they age, I worry about them having that vaccine. I told her I’d heard about the resistance and she confirmed and said she’d trust the proheart more. I know she makes money from the proheart, but she’s a great so I don’t mind. It’s bc a lot of rescues use it for slow-kill hw treatment so I’m told. And often times once they are cleared, the hw pop positive again down the road. That said, I’ve known folks who’ve used it and no issues.

One you can buy OTC.
Others need vet Rx.
You do the math why they’re steering you away from Ivermectin…legal drug dealers.

There’s a fb page on nexguard and the other preventives. It happens. Actually, all of these chemicals have danger. I don’t play with hw prevention, but hold off on fleas meds until I see a flea or some years just through the summer. I’m so sorry that happened. Flea infestations are dangerous can kill via flea anemia. We have to pick our poison sometimes depending how bad the fleas and ticks are.

I have heard heartworms are getting resistant to ivermectin,I blame it on HeartGuard.
I gave my dogs 1/10 cc per 10 lbs for years.Kept them clear of any and all worms except tapeworms.
I calculated the dose I was giving vs. Heartguard and what I was giving was. 150 x stronger.
Heartguard dose allows dogs to get roundworms and hookworms so vets can make money treating them.
I used to think vets were more honest than they actually are.I had a vet I had utmost faith in.
I was putting a cattle insecticide,Spot On (fenthion) on my beagles,1cc between the shoulder blades once a month to control fleas.I asked him about using it(didn’t tell him I had been doing it a couple of years),he told me no indeed, that stuff’s very dangerous, can kill your dogs.
Few months later guess what he was selling, exact same thing.Only difference it was in 1 cc ampules, twist the cap off and apply it between the shoulder blades.
Significantly more expensive compared to the quart bottles I was buying.
All that being said,I only have 1 dog now and I give her Interceptor for heartworms and Bravecta, for fleas.

Maybe so re the HG. There minimal IVM in those chews. That wasn’t cool for your vet to do that, I’d have mentioned something.

I have a dog that is an 80lb lab mix that I been treating with Ivermectin once a month for heartworms. He is going on 11 years and is an outside dog. So I would say it is pretty effective.

ivermectin
Cures cancer, obesity, and hangnails.
Only downside is taking it makes you impotent.

It’s not the dogs that are resistant it’s the heartwormss

the Proheart injectable and stick with Bravecto 1 x every 3 months for flea and tick prevention.
This is what I do. Had a vet recommend bravecto over NexGard so I switched. We do the 6 months for proheart

It's not the dogs that are becoming resistant, it's the heartworms. And yeah, it's a thing, not just ivermectin but the other drugs too. Our previous lab had heartworms and our current lab has had them twice. All were while on preventative. Our current one is on Proheart now, so far so good.

she’s been seeing cases where dogs are becoming resistant to ivermectin, meaning it’s not as effective against heartworms anymore
Dogs arent becoming resistant, the worms are. Each organism has its own genetics. not every worm is an exact clone. So, some will be naturally more resistant. when you use a certain drug, like ivermectin, for a long time, it selects for organisms that have a natural resistance for it to propagate. Its same concept as antibiotic resistance in bacteria.
is it real? there is very strong evidence of pockets geographically of this occurring. do i still think ivermectin is a good drug? of course. But heartworms is a devastating disease to dogs, and even if it fails in 1/1000, or 1/10000 cases, its a failure. so i will generally recommend something that i havent had cases of failure in. I have first hand seen cases of dogs on ivermectin based prevention come back positive, and higher frequency in last several years.
To address some other thoughts in this thread.
1. Yes vets are money grubbing bastards. All we really want is to rip you away from your hard earned cash. Its harder to get into vet school than med school, AND MDs make more than us by 2-3 times, but yeah, we decided vet med was the way to get rich.
2. This thread is full of morons spouting their own personal experience and luck as expertise. If you go to the toothless nitwit for advice on medicine, and follow it, dont be surprised by any consequences you or your pet suffers.

When I had dogs I would do the same thing. I'd also alternate Advantage and Frontline to keep the fleas from building resistance.

I look forward to my periodic apple-flavored horse paste on a well-buttered Nabisco Saltine.
