I’ve known several throughout my career in criminal justice. I’ve known a Gambino, Gotti, a Hitman (Irish), a leader of the Cocaine Cowboys (Cuban) and several family members, just to name a few.
I also knew the organizer of the Cocaine smuggling operation in the Bush era Iran-Contra operation.
They’ve all been stand-up guys, They did their own time and kept to themselves with the exception of the Cocaine cowboy. He was a complete a-hole. If you watch the Netflix documentary, it was the guy interviewed wearing the blue polo shirt. I was his Case Manage in Federal Prison, He took a shite on the head unit orderly’s bunk. It was brought to my attention that I had to get him immediately removed or he would be killed after the 4pm count. I had him put into a special housing (solitary) and transferred him to USP Atlanta. When I told him where he was going, he threatened to have me killed.
True story.

An older mafia member who was a cowboy with a Bowie knife in a bar in north Texas

In the 90’s a guy who moved to NOLA from the north east, Italian guy, came to town to open a cigar wholesale business, stopped at the used car lot to buy a Riviera. The finance manager was laughing after he left saying his credit bureau has a hole in it for several years with no activity showing. He’s asked the guy if he had something cleaned off his credit, he said no he had been at Sing Sing. The finance guy eventually got the loan done and he left. Would occasionally stop by the lot and chat with the salesman. Coincidently around the same time I had sold a truck to Richard Angelico the investigative reporter for WDSU who has come in and out of the lot a few times. About a month later the other salesman was laughing as I came into work, he said Richard did a story on his customer Richie and was he is in the mafia. Turns out Angelico did a story on him being in the NY mob and doing some mafia business in town. After it broke the guy skipped town. Some months later Angelico did a follow up report because he found the guy in South Florida and contacted him again. Turns out he was in the mob and had cut a deal to be an informant and the gov had to relocate him out of town.

Had lunch with a suspected mobster. I told the waitress I would have spaghetti with a side salad. If the salad was on top, I would send it back.

Parrot Heads took over a bar on Duval Street one time and I had to bail because they were annoying. Does that count?

The following will be a little long, but is absolutely true.
When we lived in Peru as missionaries. We were there for almost 9 years, and I still am active there to this day. Anyways, we purchased a piece of property back in 2011 to build a church on. As we were digging the foundation about 40 or 50 men circled the property with us being in the middle. Two of these men came forward to talk to me. They told me that I had no right to build on that property myself, and that I had to use one of their syndicates (construction crews). I asked them if they were the boss, to which they replied no. I proceeded to tell them that I had no time for them, but I would treat their bosses to lunch only tell me when and where.
Well, a couple of days later, I was told which restaurant and what time. I brought one of our associate pastors with me. There were four men at the table. I took my bible out and laid it on the table. I was the first one to say something. I said verbatim , "I know and understand who you are and what you have done in the past, but I do not see that man. Who I see are pastors, music leaders and Sunday School teachers. I will absolutely shut down my construction project right now if one of you would repent right now and put your faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior".
Sadly, no one blinked. Then three of the four started up telling me their demands for extorting money or things from me while the fourth remained silent the entire luncheon. First they said for me to build I needed to pay them $4,000 or s/12,000 their money for the right to build without using one of their syndicates. I quickly rejected this, and like satan does they began to try and barter. First they. said that they needed computers for their office, I said no. With each no the request became smaller and smaller. From computers to next, a roof. Then uniforms for their soccer teams, to simply soccer balls for their games. With each "offer" came my answer of no. Finally, I interjected saying, "look, I do not even have the money to complete the church building, yet you want me to take from that to give to you? You must be out of your mind". I then told them, "There is a book in the Bible where a group of people had to build a wall while carrying a sword and were ready to fight if need be. Make no mistake, I WILL fight you, and this church will be built." I then paid for lunch (which was ceviche, super yummy by the way) and walked out.
After a couple of hours, the silent one called me. He said, "Do not listen to those clowns. I just want work for my guys". I replied, "You know that it is stupid on my part to hire someone to do a job that I can do, or someone in our church can do. However, you have my word, that if we get to a point where we can not do something, I will call you and give you the first opportunity to give me a price." To which he agreed, and we did in fact use him for something (which is an incredible story for another day).
A couple of weeks later, I had brought my wife (no pics) and kids out to the church building site to see the progress. While there, the three talkative ones arrived. They asked me if I had made my decision on whether or not I was going to "help" them out. I reiterated that my answer was and still is no. They then asked if I would take them out to lunch. I told them, "You see that pretty lady over there, I would rather go eat lunch with her and not you ugly guys.". I then told them that I expected them to never step foot on my property again.
Everyone that I knew, along with our neighbors thought I was asking for problems, and that I needed to hire armed guards to protect the church building and supplies. I never did that, because with God, we had better protection. Those guys nor their men ever stepped foot on our property again, in fact one of them several weeks later passed by on a Moto taxi (a motorcycle with a bench seat used as a taxi) drunk as Cooter Brown. He hollered my name, when I looked as he passed by he was waving at me like we were long lost friends.
To reveal just how serious these guys were, there was a commercial development going up near by at the same time. The construction crew was from another area, and they were attacked and the supervisor was killed for not using the construction crews in that area.
All of this is 100% true with no embellishing. So, yes, I have had a real run in with the mob.
Edited to state that I have also preached in the heart of the Shining Path terror group territory. One night I preached with 30 ski masked men with automatic guns standing 15 feet behind me. They were there for our protection.

I didn’t have a personal run in but I saw a guy snatched up on Canal Street in New Orleans.
It was Feb 1976 at Marci Gras time ,I was walking down Canal Street ,the street was packed with pedestrians.A big black sedan pulled up to the curb with 4 men in suits. The front seat passenger and 1 of the men in back seat jumped out.grabbed a guy about 10 feet in front of me.They shoved him up against the wall, frisked him and then shoved him into the backseat. The 2 men jumped back it he car and took off. The whole thing took place in lesss than 30 seconds.

Too bad they couldn't start running things in NOLA again.
That place could really use some "supervision".

Damn bro. I’m more of a “pray hard but row away from the rocks” type.
Glad God’s will protected you and your family.

Two stories.
Story #1-
I was a cable guy years ago, working at Emory Hospital in ATL. Best heart surgery in the world, everyone from Saudi oil barrons to David Letterman would fly there to get heart procedures done. Emory had a small hotel tucked away behind the hospital, actually owned by Emory, for VIPs and such. I get a work order one day saying there's a problem with the phone line in room 123 or whatever. I'm told it is high priority, and to handle it first thing. So I am uniformed and whatnot, I have the work order in my hand, and I knock on the door. This blonde bombshell opens the door, looks like she stepped right out of a mob movie. She had the NY/Jersey attitude "Yeah what!"
"Yes mam', I'm here to fix your telephone"
"There's nothing wrong with my phone! Who ordered this?"
"It says here on the order, [random name]" as I'm showing it to her, and show her the room number.
"Well my name is Gotti !" and she slams the door in my face.
I walked back down to the van where my partner was waiting. "You ain't gonna believe this".
That was an interesting encounter.

Story #2-
I worked at a pizza place in the 90's right off I-75 north of Atlanta in the suburbs. The place didn't make any money at all. It was horrible, but also a slack job too, where I didn't have to bust arse and made just enough money for the simple kinds of things a 19 year old might need during the summer. Yet it had 6 different owners who all drove brand new Mercedes and dressed like they were going to the Oscars. They came in every day and sat in the back, nobody was allowed to talk to them, just keep their coffee coming and keep their ashtrays clean. One of the owners' wives ran the place, nice lady. They were all Greek, so not Italian mob. Greek mob? But that place was definitely a front for something else. There's no way that place was even paying the rent, much less the lifestyles of the multiple owners. And get this, they actually opened a second location nearby! Failing restaurants don't do that.
I only worked there one Summer, but it was around for years. Laundering money I presume.

I have family that are old school mafia. Since I was little I’d always heard about it but only met one of them once around age 20. A very old gentleman who was super nice, but could have been cast in any mafia movie you’ve ever seen. From the track suit, to the Italian accent to the dead eyes behind the smile.
