I've been in and around the car business for 20 years. I currently consult for one of the groups mentioned in the OP. I've never seen a more honest group of people in my life. These aren't your typical dealerships. They do a pretty thorough review of their fleet and only sell the top 1%. The rest go to auction.

Rental cars get a bad rap.

Sure, their brakes and transmissions will take some abuse from people who normally drive shitty cars and are excited to finally gun it.

Most people who drive rentals treat them like Faberge eggs because they don't want to get hit with bullshite damage fees when they turn it in.

Rentals are also maintained on a regular basis.

Get a mechanic to check it out and enjoy your discount.

I’ve done it on four different occasions over the last twenty years. Most recent was last fall. All from Enterprise. Never had a problem.

Enterprise was busted for selling cars with deleted side airbags a while back. The trim pieces were even stamped "side airbags". I don't know if this still goes on.

People may drive them harder than their own cars, but fleet vehicles are maintained better than 90% of any others on the road.

College girlfriend bought one that way too and it worked out.
Speaking of rode hard, abused, done things you wouldn’t do to your own,...

In ‘92 I bought a cheap econoshitbox from Enterprise.

Commuted in it until ‘95.

It did fine for 3 years & 100k miles.

Got my first company car then and am still in one today.

I’ve bought two cars from carvana. They are all former fleet cars. But I like that with Carvana you put in your downpayment, give them your income and your SSN so they can check credit and then they tell you exactly how much the car payment will be. And it’s exactly what they said it would be upfront when the first bill comes in. No bullshite.

And they drop the things off at your house. They’ll even pick up your old car if you are trading in while delivering your new car.

I’ve paid them both off now. But I liked knowing exactly what I would be paying and could shop for cars based on that monthly payment.

I bought a 2015 Mazda CX-9 2 years ago and a 2013 mustang GT 3 years ago. Not an issue whatsoever with either. Solid cars so far.

Posters above are right in that all fleet owned cars are going to be well maintained. That’s their business. It’s not Mr. Smiths business to properly service his car.

Yep, back in 98 or 99 I bought a 1998 Cherokee from Enterprise. It had about 15-20K miles on it.

Lasted me up until a couple years ago. 343,000 miles on the engine.
