re: Has anyone else’s drinking habit improved when you stopped trying to “permanently” quit?

Man. That’s good stuff.
I know you are reticent of when/where to share this, but I hope you do share it sometimes. People need to hear talk like that because the one size fits all method of treating addiction just doesn’t always work.

I haven't drank much in twenty years and just got diagnosed with cirrousus. Now I can't drink even if I wanted too.

Ran into a business associate in Costco tonight. I had an aged single malt scotch in my basket and she had a 1.5 liter blended scotch, so we compared liquor when we met up in the freezer section.
Are we functioning alcoholics? I guess so. But she drinks cheaper liquor in larger quantities. So do I win?

I have severely cut back, and I feel great in doing so, but I never really had a problem with the next day. I’ve always woken up the same, drinking or not drinking is the same for me. I’m sure that drinking less is healthier, but I really like drinking.
I often find myself thinking, if I’m not drinking, what am I going to do? But when I do drink, I don’t do much of anything.

As you get older the hangovers are worse, even from 2, and it’s not as euphoric as it once was. Even when not drinking I’ve found if I don’t get good sleep I’ll feel like I have a hangover, like wtf.

Quite possibly your finest work

I used to drink liquor and def needed to cut back. Had a few weird nights last year and decided I’m only drinking beer and wine from now on. I can’t really drink too much of either bc of feeling full or just the taste of wine getting old after 2 glasses. Let’s me be social and I haven’t had an issue since I switched off liquor. Took a month off everything before making the switch, now I pretty much just order a super light beer and the event or dinner is over by the time I’d even have a chance to get drunk. Works for me but maybe not everyone

I got drunk the other night, pissed off my family members, then tumbled down the stairs. Fractured my skull and spent a night in ICU. Gonna take 2 weeks to heal, according to doc.
I will try to stay alcohol free.

I quit drinking in 2016.
It helped me a lot.
ETA sorry I know that wasn't the question. Just sharing my experience, strength and hope. I don't look down on anybody. I still have major issues.

Replace drinking with a healthier activity

It's been 49 days straight without a drink. I just tell myself, I won't today maybe tomorrow and repeat.

I’m a daily drinker. Frustrating part is that if I could always keep it at 3 or less I’d be fine. 4 or more and it impacts my energy the next day. I still go over half the time and wake up angry at myself. Tried quitting totally. I can easily quit for months at a time. But if I have just one, I’m back to daily drinking. Exact same pattern as before. So l decided to stop trying to quit and have been working on it.
This is me as well. I’m getting better about drinking more water with the drinks. And also trying to not have anything after 8 during the week. Some nights I’m able to just do 1. I’ve also been mixing in some thc drinks as a substitute and man I sleep like a fricking rock after 2 beers and a 5mg drink.

I used to drink and was probably to the alcoholic level, near daily.
I did juggle an education, career and family, one of my coworkers once called me a "Functional Alcoholic" that kind of hit the mark.
My mom got real sick a few years ago along with some other stressors, My Dr put me on Welbutrin which not only fixed my underlying anxiety, it took away my desire to drink.
I've drank about five times in the past year and most of those were at the holidays.
Woke up today sober and feeling great physically

Irish here and mid 40s. Rarely get hangovers. My dad in his 70s is the same.

Congratulations that's great. I know I'm not an expert on it like the OT and only experience is completing a Fellowship in Addiction Medicine but most individuals usually return to drinking at a lower level. The American Society of Addiction Medicine recommends for males under 65 no more than 4 drinks a day and no more than 14 a week. For Women no more than 3 drinks a day and 7 a week. Everyone over 65 the 3 drinks a day and 7 a week. You might want to look at the Sinclair Method

quote:That's not what they "recommend," it's how they define "heavy drinking." As someone who has completed a fellowship in addiction medicine, you should probably be more precise.

ASAM also recognizes that problematic drinking is highly individual and context dependent. No reasonable medical professional would say that for every male under 65, 4 drinks is no problem at all but 5 drinks is terrible, and the second you turn 65 the calculus changes. There's a whole spectrum of what is acceptable for individual patients.

Interesting thread. Like most people in Louisiana, I overdid it bigtime through high school/college/grad school, but still made it through school fine, played sports successfully, etc.
Drank way less in my late 20s after getting married, then from around 33-38 started falling into the trap of 3-4 beers every night, more on weekends.
Around 18 months ago decided I wanted to cut back and went to only weekends, then on Friday and Saturday.
As I’m typing this I realize I haven’t had a drink in 2 months. I think a lot of people just kind of grow out of it with age.
