n Houma its 21%

A rule of thumb is to double the sales tax and that's the tip. Houma has 10.5 sales tax so 21% tip.

We took a drop at the beginning of the month. Houma is back down to 9.5%

You had a 400.00 meal with no alcohol or wine? I find it hard to believe that you werent served water when you sat down, bread, apps, salads, entrees and only saw your server once.

I don’t know where y’all are from but where I’m from kids with GEDs work hard and make a minimum salary for doing brainless work.

I don't believe any of this.

I've always rounded it off to 20% or higher.

I’m a generous tipper but doesn’t it seem to have gotten out of control. You need to tip if you order a sandwich and take it from the counter, you need to tip on pick-up orders, tip when you get a haircut or massage. Again, I’m usually a 20%+ tipper when given good service but I’m starting to fill like people have become entitled a bit too much.

if you look at check that Grat is included it's always 18% 15% went away awhile back. Quit being cheap or start cooking your own meal and stop being lazy.

Aren't these scenarios where you generally should have always tipped? I don't think these are recent developments. Sure, the amounts may differ (e.g., for the sandwich scenario, it would likely just be a $1 or something and not necessarily 20%).

Oh grow up. You're like almost 40 years old and you're still using the word "triggered." Can't we have an honest conversation about this -- free of childish insults?

Yes your right. I think there’s some bleed over there from the 20% issue. For whatever reason I seem to notice a need to tip more than before. It also seems that although the expected 20% has been an increase from 15-18%, the service hasn’t gotten better. I would say it’s gotten worse on average.

20% has always been the standard. If the server is horrible, less. If the server is tremendous more.

No it has not. It is 15% that is why gratuity charges are typically 18% because of the higher amount of people.

If you can't afford the tip, you cannot afford to go out to dinner.

Servers make $2.13 / hour in Louisiana.

Totally agree. Too easy to put the tip line on the credit card slip. My rules of thumb are:

Baristas get tipped for a complicated coffee, they get my change or nothing at all for a pre-brewed black coffee.
Bartenders get $1/round for beer, 20% for cocktails.
Sandwich artists get nothing.
Takeout gets nothing.

Hairdresser gets generous tip ~ 30-40% -- definitely want to stay on their good side.
Taxi drivers get rounded up ~ i.e. $20 for an $18 fare.
I avoid airport/hotel porters.
