Well he did damn near hack a woman’s head off with a knife.
That warrants something more than a slap on the wrist, but I do agree that life is too much considering he is not mentally “all there” and he was used to an extent.
The entire story is bizarre.

The mom never really got caught hard by anyone. Gypsy found out on her own that everything was being done the way her mom wanted. If you look at the crime scene photos, there are closets with prescription medicine. She was falsifying her medical records by stating she lost them in Katrina and would jump around from hospital to hospital and strong arm the doctors to helping her. I believe Habitat for Humanity or Make A Wish even built them a home.
Truly her mother got what she deserved and Gypsy did make a pretty radical choice. I’m sure Gypsy could’ve gotten her case done for free and sent her mother to prison for an extremely long time. I have no idea what the courtroom battle would like, but I’d imagine there’s enough evidence to show that her mother had full control of her physical life and mental state.
