Melanie Coleman, a 20-year-old gymnast at Southern Connecticut State University, died Sunday after sustaining an injury while training last Friday.

Ken Sweeten, a spokesperson for Southern Connecticut State, confirmed to CNN Monday that Coleman fell during what he described as a "routine training exercise" on the uneven bars.
"At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with Melanie's family," the university's athletic director, Jay Moran, said in a statement Monday. "This has been devastating to her coaches and teammates and we hope to support them in this very difficult time."
Coleman's longtime personal coach, Thomas Alberti, called the incident "a complete accident" Monday. "It's just not something that anybody can process."

Damn, a 20 year old, too. Trying to better herself. Just isn't right. DUI drivers live after crashes and she dies simply trying to perform her dream of being a college gymnast.

This is actually one of those often repeated myths

DUI drivers in multiple car accidents are more likely to die than the sober parties in the other vehicle.

But yes, it's a shame about the gymnast.

Must've fell on her neck. I cant think of any other injury that could result in death in that environment. They have padded floors and gymnast are extremely muscular and flexible.

Eta:

quote:

According to a since deleted tweet from a reputable source, she didn’t release the bar at the right time which caused her to fly over the low bar landing on her stomach with her feet over her head (I’m thinking something like the Keri Strug fall where she is literally screaming “help me”). The low bar side doesn’t usually have a landing mat, just a regular mat. I’d guess she either suffered a severe head injury/brain bleed and/or a severe spinal cord injury. Possibly both. This seems like a particularly dramatic fall if the tweet was correct, but anyone can die from “just” hitting their head in the wrong place with enough force.

quote:

I heard she was supposed to do a double back off bars, but did not do it and as she didn't let go, she swang back, and her hands slipped on the backswing and she flew over the low bar and landed really
badly.

Tragic.

I have always been amazed we don't hear of serious injuries on the uneven bars more often than we do.

I don’t think he’s trying to prove a scientific fact. You baws can’t be that dense?

Very sad. Those girls can work up some force when they do their routine.

That 2nd quote matches with the Kerri Strug like fall mentioned in the first. I’ll find a link to a video. Watch at your own risk but Kerri did recover, obviously.

Not meaning to sound insensitive but they call that a “scorpion fall” in extreme sports. I feel for her family. Tough news to hear this morning.

He chose a strange thing to compare. Lots of people do stupid things and live.

Growing up, my sister and I always wanted a trampoline. My mother never let us get one because she had taken gymnastics at MSCW (now Mississippi University for Women) and had seen too many injuries.

Probably for the best, although there were a few trampolines in the neighborhood that we got to jump on.

Landing straight on your head, imagine what stance it creates for your lower limbs.

Hence the scorpion comparison.

Most online anti-DUI crusaders are serial (if uncaught) drunk drivers themselves.

It's kind of like the people who sit in their employer-provided bathroom stall and post about how butthurt welfare programs make them feel.

These people think they're living an Ayn Rand novel but they're actually living Garfield.

I am in CT on business, and one of the bank tellers i'm working with is friends with the family of the gymnast - it has hit this area really hard up here
