Gym board: How often to you take a break.

I've always heard that you should take a week off every 3 months and a solid month off every year for best gains and proper healing. Is this the hardest part esp for someone who enjoys the daily routine of the gym?
OT meatheads, what's your rest routine?

Started my current break back in 2007.

People who tell you to rest just want to be able to pass you up

Work out twice a day. Rest in between.

I don't see how taking off an entire month(unless you are actually injured and following doctor's orders) would have any benefits. Seems like it would just make it that much more difficult to get back into a decent workout routine and set you up to eat really badly that entire time as well.

He is probably talking about people who lift ridiculously heavy, not just normal exercise/lifting.

never
I'll only work out once a day while on vacation so that could be considered a break

If you're doing heavy lifting, then I'd suggest taking a "rest" week about every 6 to 8 weeks. This doesn't mean you just don't go to the gym. It just means to kick up the cardio a bit and keep your lifts in the 50 to 65% max range.

I take a few days off every couple of months, where I just say frick it and do nothing for about 3-4 days. Normally when I expect to be on a drinking binge.
Actually just started back yesterday after a week off but that was due to injury. Felt like a month, and felt like I lost 3 months worth of work.

I'm taking a week off after 3 months right now. I just need a break.

If you're training hard for competition or whatever, I guess rest periods would be useful. If you're just exercising for general fitness, not so much. Now, you will get tired of what you're doing from time to time, so what you do then is change your routine, or take a break-but that doesn't mean lie on the couch for a month. Go do something active, hiking, cycling or whatever. If you keep moving, you can go several weeks without losing much of your gains.
And sometimes you get hurt or sick, or life circumstances keep you from working out. Nothing you can do about that, except get back to it when you can.

It honestly depends on how hard you are hitting it. If you are a moderate gym goer and your workout lasts 45minutes of light work, and you usually only go 3 days a week, then you dont need a break. Now if you are really going for it and pushing big weights 4 days a week, yea then maybe take a week off every 5-6 months.

I usually take a rest day on Sunday. Are you talking longer rests, like a week? I might do a run week where I just run or do yoga, but I can't really have a week where I do nothing. I feel like crap after I do nothing on Sunday.

Same. I feel sluggish and lazy all week if I do that and then I end up eating horribly as well.
