Nah, there were a few things that confirmed it early on
OP posted a few weeks ago asking for help about the surgery LINK
A search on Facebook showed a post from her sister from well before this post confirming the death and the story (and not asking for money) and everyone replying sorry and sending prayers and hugs
For it to be a scam it would be pretty well thought out and evil getting another Facebook user on board to lie to people about a death

It's so hard these days. People, especially addicts, will make up all kinds of sad stories to get money and sympathy.
My wife's sister started posting on Facebook that she has cancer, which was a total lie. She would post about it and conned a bunch of people. And the scary part was, if I was just reading the posts and didn't know better, I would have believed her as well.
I'm not going to judge Eric here and will pray for him with whatever he's going through. 2020 has been a shitty year. If what he's saying is true, that's heartbreaking, but it's also heartbreaking if this isn't true and he's using again. I doubt addicts get much sympathy in a place like the OT, but this year has been so hard on everyone battling addiction and mental illness.

I suggest patience. If it turns out a scam, the only thing more impressive than the OTs generosity is its ability to dox people and exact revenge.
Quite true. If this is a scam, I hope Chicken lets us go nuts with no bans.

This thread turned into a shite show. Are people really posting his criminal record?
Either donate if you feel comfortable or don’t. Why does it have to be any more complicated than that?

This is not judgment. This is discernment.
There are a million ways to verify a death and story nowadays. Nothing wrong with waiting for more confirmation before sending someone $20K.
One guy posted a GFM for his dad who lost his house from Laura and Delta and due to COVID he had lost his job and couldn't afford insurance. Even had a news article about it and the OT gave him squat and I am pretty sure the thread was removed yet this guy gets $20K just based on his story without any real verification. Just odd to me.

No clue if those mugshots are OP or not though

That's fair. I would rather err on the side of naivete than cynicism, especially when it's only a few bucks out of my pocket.
I respect that. I really do.
I err on the side of not rewarding deception.
Again, I could be horrifically wrong. At this point, since the goal has been met, what does that matter?

I forgot many years ago but I think this guy in Indianapolis did something and people found his address and number... sent him all kinds of pizzas delivered and signed him up for gay porn, etc. I don’t remember the back story though anymore

For better or worse, when you open yourself up to the public, the public is going to do their due diligence - at least on the internet. I don't blame anyone for doing some research.

I donated and idc that he has a criminal history, but I have no problem with it being posted. People giving this guy cash imo deserve to know who he is.

Could always report it to gofundme and see if they will verify it if there is some real concern. They could lock it down and prevent him collecting until it is verified.

Right because that is so complicated to do that no one would ever think of it.
Remember the good samaritan GFM scam a while back?
Just saying that just because it seems too well thought out to be a scam doesn't mean it's not a scam.
I will reserve any conclusions until there is further verification than just the OPs threads and some Facebook post.

I believe that was during the Saints-Colts Super Bowl period and he was . . . unkind when saying things about Hurricane Katrina, if I'm not mistaken.
So, yeah, the stories I've heard were not good. And I strongly recommend no one does anything like that today. You will likely not be here anymore if you do those things.

That got a lot of people banned and was fricking awesome

I’d be way too scared to attempt a monetary scam on the OT.

To be fair, it could be the answer to the question as to why he has been out of work. I assume everyone thought he was laid off because of COVID but what if it was through his own fault for drug usage or something?
Again, nothing wrong with questioning his story and checking out all information before giving to someone asking for donations.

Why does the husband start a GFM as David but then posts on his dead wife’s Facebook as Eric?
Why does Sonya have pictures of her hugging on a guy that looks like her brother in law?
