1. Let him have the spot, because if you try to take it they will key your car.
2. When they walk away from their car, get a rock from the parking lot and put it underneath the tire valve cap and tighten it so that it lets the air out of the tire.

I would have been way too pissed at assholes who think the world revolves around them, and they can take things and other people have to just frick off. This is part of what gets me worked up driving around goddamn Baton Rouge. It's people who feel ENTITLED to move ahead of others and thus they don't have to follow any social order.
I would have set up shop with my car in front of that spot and either I was getting it or for damn sure whoever he was saving the spot for was not. And I'm not even going to pretend as though I would attempt to physically remove that dude from the spot. frick that. That's a big ole boy. But I would park my shite right there. Granted I can't necessarily fault this driver. He calculated whether the nagging he was going to hear from the passenger seat for the duration of that encounter would be tolerable and he decided that it would not. Probably a wise choice.

Yes!! this is a great idea, teach him that he has control over this kind of thing and can charge you money for a public space.. You sound worse than the wife, I would politely ask him to move then I'd pull up as far as he would allow, and call the police.. Dudes probably got a warrant anyway

A tad difficult to do nonchalantly, but I can dig it.
I typically am a pretty laid back person, but at the very least I would have flattened a tire on the way back. That kind of petty shite has a tendency to irk me the most.

I dont give a shite what lesson he learns. I want the space and I dont want a confrontation nor do I want to sit there all day in a stalemate?
