The sense I got was that his girlfriend said something to him ("that guy disrespected me"- that's the word women tend to use) and that she expected "her man" to do something about it. No doubt she gets a cheap thrill from it, and has probably done it before.

Doesn't excuse the assailant, but that's probably the dynamic at work here.
