People always think their childhood era was better because they are biased by not having as many responsibilities at the time.

However, I do feel bad for suburban kids who never get to go play in the woods or countryside in general. Suburbia seems really antiseptic.

“Smear the queer”

They’d lock all the players up for a hate crime now if that game was played.

I pity younger people because their childhoods sucked.

People that grew up in the 50's and 60's probably said the same about you and the 80's. I wouldn't say the experiences kids have today sucks, it is just different from what we knew and loved growing up.

Same with me. Leave the house and as long as we were back at dark it was all good. Hunt in a stand by myself or squirrel hunt.

Other things we did:

Ride in the backs of trucks.
No seat belts
Ride our bikes over Coursey Blvd to Lake Sherwood to fish every day in the summer.
Play on baseball teams that were neighborhood kids: "NO SELECT TEAMS"
Football practice with no water.(Not sure that was the smartest thing )
Go out with friends and parents couldn't track our location.
Go in the tunnels under LSU

Well do you know that many now? Or do you think it’s more widespread because you hear about it online?

And to be honest, these aren’t the sort of things that’s any other kids business.

I remember how fun it was to go play outside during a heavy rain/thunderstorm. I seem to remember this happening frequently when I was pre-teen during the summer months.

That was back when people used to say “You have a greater chance of getting struck by lightning than _________ (insert long shot event here)”. Nowadays, being struck by lightning isn’t treated like some long shot occurrence. There are now more lightning delays in sporting events in one month than the entire decade of the ‘80’s.

Does anyone else remember how lightning striking someone used to be the reference point when a person was trying to say an event would never happen?

Random 80s thoughts...looking back as a kid I never knew anyone allergic to peanuts. I can't recall anyone being autistic...we did have a special ed class, but I think those kids were more handicapped than autistic. I used to take my 410 and go squirrel hunting by myself at my grandma's house when I was surely not a teenager yet. As a parent I can not fathom this now.

Our special ed classes were for the full-blown retards as well as those that were just not smart enough (or applied themselves enough) to make it in the regular classes. There was a stigma to it as you progressed through grades but it made for a much better educational atmosphere for both sets of kids (going at a more accommodating speed for slower students, not having to worry about behavior issues for the other classes).

Waking up on Saturday mornings for cartoons was like a mini Christmas morning every week. (for me that was more the 70's and very early 80's)

Being able to go out with friends and not be tied to a phone is almost inconceivable now.

Having far less of a PC culture was nice. Instead of being outrageously offended at any little thing the offended party just sucked it up and didn't socialize with you.

The 80's was a great time to be a kid because of all the awesome toy lines. He-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, G.I. Joe, Star Wars, Transformers, Thundercats, Ghotstbusters.

In my very early teen years there was a kid who rode BMX bikes on some kind of circuit and he was always bragging about it. So we made him some kick arse ridiculous ramp and peer pressured him into jumping it. Poor guy broke a leg, ankle, and arm doing that. He was in a wheel chair part of the school year due to it. Last time I saw him he was working at Massey's in Covington.

At 10 I used to bush hog at the farm while my grandpa fed the cows and mended fences. I carried a .22 pistol and grandpa carried his .45. He also kept a 12 ga. and a 30-30 in his gun rack at all times.

We did the same thing. Felt like we were 10 ft in the air when it was probably only 5 or 6. Eventually we learned to balance, keep the front wheel down and head forward. We probably averaged 20 Miles a day during the summers. Now it’s “too hot” for kids to go out and all their bikes look brand new.

My friends and I were always outside playing pickup football, basketball and baseball against other kids from other streets in the neighborhood.

We all played organized sports year round on the same teams.

When it snowed we would sled all day.

At night we would play hide-n-sneak.

Our parents wouldn't have allowed us to watch tv after school. We were expected to play outside.

I had an Atari, but only played it after dinner.

I was born in 83 so I caught the tail end, but even in the 90's it was cool to go to the park with a football and baseball glove. There were always tons of kids there to get a game going.

I'm not sure if it was truly a safer time, or our parents just didn't care. We'd get there on 10am on a Saturday, come home for lunch, and go back until it was time for dinner.
