Yeah, I had to help on Grandpa’s farm as a kid.
Lots of us did.

It’s not as easy as Kork thinks to know what and when to do things, especially with weather considerations.
Again, the world's knowledge is at our fingertips. Pretty sure most of us could get it close enough.

I expect his mentality is like AOC thinking the rubes dont have copy machines or internet. Like the meme I saw, “wait until she finds out we have computers and gps on our tractors”.
I know full well how much tech there is in farming, which is why I find it funny the posters in here bringing up apocalyptic scenarios with no grid etc. As if it would be absurd if I monitor my garden with tech.

I admit you would probably be better at planting a garden than you would be at making friends. You sound miserable to be around.

I can’t wait for my tomatoes to come in. Hard to beat a thick sliced home grown tomato on fresh baked bread with a little mayo, salt and pepper.

Bet I'll be popular after the apocalypse and I'm the only one that knows how to grow a potato.

I'm on an anonymous message board talking shite in a vegetable garden thread at midnight. This is entertainment. I promise we could have a good time over a few beers. I might even grow some crops and make a homegrownbrew.

I'm really gonna start a garden though. I guess no matter what I plant it'll grow into soy?

Wait, I remember you now. The hack who kept saying the (ongoing) riots and lawlessness in Seattle and Portland were overblown. Looks to me like those Mayors are having a change of heart wanting the cops back suddenly.
You a professor ? - strike me as someone who thinks book (internet) knowledge is a substitute for practical experience and common sense.
Well, I wish you luck in farming if it comes to that but I’m not putting my eggs in your basket - so to speak. You have about as much credibility as Fauci and Biden in my view

Everything is overblown if you watch certain media. Portland has a very long history of problems with their police, and also a very long history of (sometimes violent) protests. Nothing new here.

You think any mayor, or even a significant portion of the population, ever didn't want any cops?

No, nothing compares to getting hands-on with something. But it should be obvious that it's much faster to get up to speed if you start with some knowledge and then get hands-on, rather than vice versa which is basically trial and error.

Hey that's a good idea too. I mean how hard could it be to raise some chickens?

Well, I was gonna raise chickens last year and I looked all over the internet but couldn't find a damn thing about how to plant chicken seeds.

You probably weren't using the right search terms, you need a cock to plant chicken seeds. Try searching different combinations of "cock", "seed", and "young chicks".

I didn't say it was that simple. I said I could spend a day on youtube and grow plants like someone who has done it their whole life.

No you couldn't.

I always get a kick out of the "anyone can be a farmer" comments. There's a big difference between growing a plant and producing a crop.

When people speak about things getting lost in generations, this should be one of the biggest ones. Older people know how to actually grow shite.

I used to do this until I realized that I was spending more on the garden than buying it at the store. Also, it didn’t help that I was bad at. I would starve if I had to do it. So rather than tearing up part of the yard once a year, I have more grass to cut.

You haven't been paying attention. Home gardening among young folks is a pretty big thing now. Micro gardens and shite.

Had a delicious cucumber out of my garden with my spaghetti last night. Cant get them good and crunchy like that at Wal Mart. Also have chickens and more eggs than I know what to do with.

A fresh tomato from the garden is great. I think quality and flavor are better than store bought.

What about starting a fire with sticks? It’s not hard to grow some tomatoes. People just don’t want or need to do it anymore.

One day a long time ago, there were people making fun of those lazy farmers since all they do it sit home and grow their food instead of chasing that boar with a spear and bringing it back to the village.

“Pfft. Elmer probably can’t even string a bow.”

Lulz. I’ve seen people with remarkably little resourcefulness grow gardens. It’s a job they gave the old ladies back in the day. My grandmother was a half wit and put out enough to feed the block.

Yes lots of people do not have the skill set to provide for themselves. Spent many a day at my great grandparents house prepping bushels of snap beans and field peas. They always had a fully stocked pantry of jarred vegetables. People nowadays also vastly underestimate the size of a garden required to actually self sustain. A couple raised bed boxes won’t cut it and you also need to focus on just a handful of crops instead of growing two or three plants of everything under the sun.

Oh there's no thinking to be done. Commercial tomatoes are picked green so they can use machinery and not damage the hard tomatoes. Then they are treated with ethylene gas to "ripen" them...actually just to turn them red. They are still hard and taste like an unripe tomato.

Never grew a plant in my life until about 2 years ago. Dug a bed about 2’x12’. Bought a random tomato plant from the local nursery which was about 6” high. End up being a New Girl Tomato plant. Produced about 20 tomatoes a few months later and I made spaghetti sauce with it. All I did was set up a sprinkler on a timer.

This year have 3 grape tomato plants. Worst part is having to prune them so often since they growing out of control.

Same story with peppers, okra, etc. Hell, I got some random pumpkin seeds and planted them. Had a small pumpkin a few months later. It ain’t hard if you’re not an idiot and have halfway decent growing conditions.
