About to graduate from UGA and I've spent my past 4 years wondering how you can be so fricking stupid as to "haze" like this.
Not saying balls to the wall hazing is needed, but there are far better ways to shape someone into your fraternity than to make them down 190 proof. Why risk someone dying just so you can get a brief giggle at how drunk you made a younger guy.
Mental games go a long way in the pledgeship department and last I checked they don't kill anybody and it's hard to prove it took place.

This was the loser fraternity of guys who didn't get bids elsewhere. They killed a kid because they thought that's how the respected fraternities treated their pledges.

graduated in '91 and spent the last seven months wondering how fricking stupid you have to be to "drink" like Gruver did.
responsibility is ALL on the deceased. He wasn't forced to drink against his will. He just drank too much. Most every college kid has done it- at a fraternity party, tailgate, grub, exchange, bar, spring break, etc.
Gruver just happened to do it while smoking weed. Most of the time you are OK. He died.
Sad, but its all on him.

Maybe so but the Kappas had a girl from Toronto when I was at LSU.

This was a bottom tier weirdo fraternity that no one knows anyone in.

Defense lawyers aren't involved in the grand jury process. GJ's typically do what the DA wants. Either there really wasnt much of a case against most of these guys or the DA wasnt trying very hard.
Which brings up a question about Hillar Moore ... Why does he punt to a Grand Jury on cases involving football players in bar fights and fraternity hazing incidents? I understand that a person died in this incident, but Moore seems to frequently avoid making a decision whenever he can.

Fact. Phi Delts were the easily one of the worst chapters on campus. Nobody went there except the losers.

A grand jury is usually the EASIER way of bringing charges. Only the prosecution is allowed to present evidence; nothing from the defense. This isn’t Moore punting. Also the proceedings are secret.

Happened just like Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade said it would.

So the shitty fraternity thinks that good fraternities haze balls with 190 proof, so they decide to do it? I guess they are too out of shape to physically haze with calisthenics and chugging beer.

This is the attitude of the low tier houses at LSU. Here is an e-mail they sent out 12 or 13 years ago. And just imagine—the Phi Delts make the Pikes look like Miles Davis.
quote:
Brothers;
This is absolutely pathetic. It is a fricking Friday Night and the house is absolutely dead. I can not believe that of the 38 brothers in Baton Rouge there is nothing going on at the best damn house on campus. Myself and Tony have been watching Ramda Guy pull a 3 to 1 pussy to dick ratio and we cant even get one chick over here. Is this the fraternity you want to be in? Is this the reason you pay dues? Whose fault is it that every other fraternity on campus has something going on right now but, yet we are sitting around with our thumbs in our asses? Ramda Guy has been on SOCIAL PROBATION for ONE year and they are still able to pull arse like we could only dream of. What is the problem here? Are we just a bunch of douche bags or does every member of Ramda Guy has a 10"cock that all the girls know about? It is disgusting that everyone is perfectly satisfied that the best damn FRATERNITY on campus can not pull arse l! ike the other weaker fraternities. Everyone including myself should be ashamed of themselves. We need to stop looking out for ourselves and better PIKE's IMAGE. Because right now our only IMAGE is that we are a bunch of douche bags who can't get a damn chick if we paid her. Do you really think Pikes at other schools want to associate themselves with us? What if you went to get a job as Tim McGraw's road manager and he laughed at you because you were a DOUCHE BAG PIKE at LSU? Do you really want to be that guy? Are you tired of being laughed at when we go to a convention? Something needs to happen BROTHERS and I am up for ideas. I have no clue who is supposed to be in charge of improving our image and our ability to get women here but, I assuming control and I dont give a shite who was supposed to do it they can kiss my white hairy old school PIKE arse. If you have any ideas please email me but until then my wheels are turning! and yours should be too.
Until next time, enjoy.
Your Fearless Editor
PS If this doesn't piss you off then please resign from the fraternity.

How is it easier? The DA's Office still has to investigate the alleged crime AND then they have to present the case to laymen on the Grand Jury and explain the various charges that may be appropriate. Hillar Moore can't look at the evidence and choose the most appropriate charge? Sure he can. Going to the Grand Jury for an indictment is "easier" only in the sense that the DA's Office has someone to pass the buck to in case of political fallout.
Does every crime in EBR go before a Grand Jury? Of course not. Do you know which ones almost always do? The ones Moore doesn't want to make a decision on out of fear of alienating a segment of voters. So he PUNTS to the Grand Jury and says, "It was THEIR decision to make." and uses that excuse as political cover. It's chickenshit.
