Grand Jury Returns Decision on Phi Delts Charged In Gruver's Death

Jurors pretermitted — declining to take action — after considering whether to issue misdemeanor hazing charges against Hudson Brandt Kirkpatrick, 19, of Baton Rouge; Zachary Tower Hall, 21, of Charlotte, North Carolina; Elliott Eaton, 20, of New Orleans with a misdemeanor count of hazing. They also pretermitted in the decision about whether to charge Sean-Paul Gott, 21, of Lafayette with negligent homicide and obstruction of justice.
Jurors pretermitted in a negligent homicide charge they considered against Ryan Matthew Isto, 19, of Canada. They also pretermitted in obstruction of justice and hazing charges considered against Zachary Antonio Castillo, 19, of Terrytown. Jurors also pretermitted on negligent homicide and obstruction charges against Patrick Andrew Forde, 21, of Westwood, Massachusetts.
They cleared Nicholas Michael Taulli, 20, of Cypress, Texas, on a hazing charge.
Police have said Gruver, of Roswell, Georgia, was targeted by senior members of Phi Delta Theta in a hazing ritual they dubbed "Bible study" that required pledges to chug 190-proof liquor when they incorrectly answered questions about the fraternity.

So basically, too many people involved so we got to confused. We decided frick it. Let them all off since we can't figure out whom to find guilty.

Defense lawyers aren't involved in the grand jury process. GJ's typically do what the DA wants. Either there really wasnt much of a case against most of these guys or the DA wasnt trying very hard.

So, is pretermitting something the same as a no true bill kind of thing where they are saying there is not enough evidence to charge, or are they just punting and letting the DA charge through bill of information if he wants?

I think it means they think there is guilt but maybe not enough evidence to go to trial at the time.
DA can still go forward with charges though.

This is so true. I testified for the DA at a Grand Jury in a rural parish. Sat down at a conference table, it wasn't even a courtroom type room, and the DA just said "tell them what happened." I started telling the story and he goes, "just skip to the part where the guy did it." It was pretty funny.
