I was an alter boy in southwest Louisiana from age 6 to 18. No priest ever tried to abuse me. The priests who have committed these horrible acts will have to answer to the god they claimed to serve, but that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of good priests put there

Although I can agree with the celibacy part, these priests getting busted are usually complete weirdo perverts that prey on children. They're not interested in having sex with adult women (or any women for that matter) and seem to use the priest profession to disguise who they are and their motives.

So since this is actual sexual crimes against children and not the fictional ones the right likes to make up to slander the transgendered, where is the outrage? fricking hypocrites

I don't know how a parent today with knowledge of this situation would let their kids be an alter boy. Yes, not every alto boy gets molested, but why put your child in a environment where their chances of getting molested is greatly increased.
This was just one State, 1000 victims and countless others that have not come forward with their abuse.
They need to let their priests marry and get rid of having alter boys all together.

"They will have to answer to God" doesnt really help the victims or the victims' parents, now does it?
Nor does it provide a solution to prevent this from happening again.

As someone stated earlier, these priests aren't just breaking their celibacy vows. They're molesting children. If it was a simple Celibacy issue the priests would just have sex with adults.

I agree, however the vow of celibacy can be used as a cover and the Catholic Priesthood is the perfect cover and gives an opportunity to prey upon children.
It seems Episcalpalisns and Southern Methodists don't have the same issue.

Exactly.
They probably should stop having alter boys though considering all the widespread issues. They don't need little boys to help them out. No reason to keep making it easy for perverts to do perverted things.

The Roman and Eastern Catholic Churches are the the closest relationship to Jesus one can have on Earth.
You should actually read the bible other than the made up shite the Catholics added to it to remain in power.
The closest relationship anyone can have to Jesus is their own personal relationship with Him. The pope, bishops, etc are men just like you are. They are no closer to God than you. Anyone that tells you any different or if you believe that they are, you are all fools!!!

You are correct on all points, but the catholic church allowing priest to marry would open the priesthood up to a larger pool of normal people who would like to be a priest but cannot deal with the celibacy aspect, in time that would probably drive the perverts away from the priesthood.

There are probably a lot of older guys that will never come forward, I am in my 60s and have discussed this with some of my older friends who are Catholic, I am not. A couple were altar boys, they agreed that at that age if they had come home and accused a priest of molesting them they would have got their arse beat by their dad for just saying that, priest then were held in high regard and above reproach. My friends believe this problem goes back so far in history that the Catholic priesthood could have been designed to be the perfect profession for pedophiles.

So Celibacy/ abstinence or resorting to pedophilia are the only options? There are adult Male / Female parishioners , clergy , etc...........that they can have discreet sexual relations with.

That would require homeschooling and keeping them out of Scouting, youth sports, and music/theater.

The cover up here is just as bad as the crime. Just because you wear a priest outfit doesn't make you above the law here on earth. I have always felt a pedophile should be executed. These are crimes of pedophilia so hanging them high at the Vatican would be the appropriate punishment. Then God could judge them quicker if that is how it all works after we pass.

Celibacy is unnatural and people with deep-seated sexual issues seem to flock to it. The Catholic church is rotten to the core for repeatedly covering this stuff up. I wish that church would cease to exist.

OP should adjust the title. These are allegations against 300 priests since 1940, almost all before 1990. Many are no longer alive.
It doesn’t really matter as I am sure that priest abuse of children didn’t magically stop in 1990.
I don’t know how a thinking person reconciles their membership and support of the Catholic church with the repeated and heinous acts of its leadership.

quote:Absolutely. Christianity is centered around a personal relationship with Christ. The Catholic Church offers literal communion through the real body and blood of Christ. Its not about the priests, bishops or the Pope. Its about communion.

This will be my only contribution to this thread.
I am Catholic. My parents are Catholic. All but one of my grandparents were Catholic. I was married in the Catholic Church. I went to Catholic school. My kids will be raised as Catholics.
But it’s really hard to be a Catholic knowing that this is going on and how the church is handling this.
In most cases, the Catholic Church thinks in terms of centuries while the rest of us live day by day. Yet with this this issue, they are extremely short sighted. If they want to retain a big, powerful presence in the developed world in 100-200 years, they need to investigate and expel proven abusers from their positions (and in some cases turn them in to law enforcement) instead of attempting to reform and relocate them. Deal with a shortage of priests in the short term and rely on deacons and other clergy if they have to.
It’s a church made up of people, so it won’t be perfect....but its secretive nature has attracted bad apples. It cannot be treated as a quarter for people like that. Put in the effort to investigate accusations instead of just moving the priests around. The practice of avoiding a serious investigation and moving priests to another parish or attempting to reform them is lazy and damaging.
