Grading for Equity eliminates homework or weekly tests from being counted in a student’s final semester grade. All that matters is how the student scores on a final examination,
Don’t really have a big issue with this

which can be taken multiple times.
Nope. Sit your arse through another year if you want to take it again.

Holy frick lol

It was so ridiculous that even the San Francisco folks complained, and it's being (for now!) taken off the plan.
"SFUSD kills controversial grading proposal after backlash"
San Francisco Chronicle
I'd be fine with making grades more about what students really know by the time the course (or grading period) ends. But taking away easy-to-get points for attendance and homework would seem to me to disproportionately reduce the grades weaker students. And the article talks about finding ways to make grades more consistent among teachers and schools, which sounds good to me--but to do that requires standardized testing, and not to many very liberal folks like that.

This is why I drink and smoke. Who wants these people taking care of you when you are old and frail? I'm going out like a firecracker.

is their school board elected?

No, this is inspired by people who encourage and excuse shitty behavior of not only these kids but their parents as well.
So kinda the same thing lol

I love my job and working with kids. I would not be teaching any more if my district did this.

OK now I am 100% sure this is not due to simple brain damage of those recommending this but rather due to their complete and utter vindictiveness with the intentions of ruining the education intelligence of US students for some nefarious purpose.
There’s just absolutely no other way that this is being taken seriously

All they have to do is take the SAT or ACT, and colleges will realize how fricking stupid these kids are.
Unfortunately, many colleges, even in SEC country, are dropping ACT/SAT requirements.

I wish they would put as much time into actual teaching as they do trying to get out of teaching.

Probably their parents. That's who truly failed the child.

What could possibly go wrong?
Posted on 5/29/25 at 6:41 am to RLDSC FAN
Relaxation of standards only hurts low performers and those without structured home lives. Enacting this “grading for equity” will only worsen the divide between high and low achievers
Posted on 5/29/25 at 7:31 am to HoustonGumbeauxGuy
Except many colleges will still accept them after graduation

Every time something like this happens in the Bay Area, parents in the impacted area give comments to the press like "we didn't ask for this, we weren't included in the process!"
SF is 42% white. 13% of SF public school students are white. 30% of SF students are in private schools. These translates to most white students being out of the picture.
San Francisco's Asian population and public school population are right at 36%. Asian (and white) students score ~50% higher on state tests than black students, and ~40% higher than Hispanic students.
This is yet another push to undermine Asian kids because most Asian cultures place a strong emphasis on educational achievement.

There is no way that all of these efforts to essentially decrease intelligence and education in this country can be seen as anything other than an act to weaken America.

The superintendent is saying it’s paused for at least this year, but in one day the backlash of what appears to have been a unilateral decision by has been high and bipartisan.
Silicon Valley Dem US Rep Ro Khanna
quote:
“My immigrant dad asked me where the missing 10% went when I scored a 90,” Khanna tweeted. He said giving A’s to more students “is not equity—it betrays the American Dream and every parent who wants more for their kids.”
And San Francisco’s Mayor’s
quote:
We owe our young people an education that prepares them to succeed. The proposed changes to grading at SFUSD would not accomplish that.
I have conveyed our view to SFUSD. We are optimistic that there is a better path forward for our kids and their future.

It's not a coincidence the teachers union is in favor of it because it further reduces any work they need to do as well as their accountability.
Wrong. The majority of teachers would get the hell out of this situation as quickly as possible. Unions rarely represent the average teacher.
