What’s the grace period in LA that a person’s current auto insurance will cover a new car that’s purchased over the weekend?

I think it is 30 days as long as you don’t change limits on coverage.

It depends on the carrier and your coverages.

Typically It's 10 days.. Also, depends on company guidelines and if coverages are needing to be added

We have State Farm. My agent told me 14 days about a month ago when I asked.

You should have several days to a couple of weeks, I believe. Log into your account if you're really worried and want to make sure; you may be able to add the car online and get coverage effective immediately. I logged in and added the last car I bought before I left the dealer's showroom.

Of course, I waited until a week later to drop coverage on my old car after I was sure the paperwork had cleared the DMV and this great shithole of a state wouldn't try to fine me hundreds of dollars for cancelling insurance before they got the transfer of title on the vehicle.

If you are wanting to know if you can drive out a new car out of the dealership with your current card...yes

30 days in TX. That I know. I guess it's different in LA

It depends on the carrier and your coverage.

I know someone that bought a new truck on a Saturday and didn't drive away with insurance on it. Sunday morning woke up and the truck was gone from the driveway. Insurance didn't cover.

My father bought a car in a Saturday, on Sunday a guy who was uninsured hit it while parked on the street. The force of the crash was so great that the fuel tank ruptured and the car exploded and caught fire, rendering it a pile of charred metal. His insurance covered it.

Don’t wait, just call them up and get it insured. It takes 5 minutes

Louisiana state law is 60 days. I tell my insured 30 days because people procrastinate and will forget about it.

I always change it before I drive it off the lot. I mean, why not? If you can't afford the $50 uptick, you shouldn't be buying a new car anyway.
