No, there will always be unavoidable accidents, acts of God and mechanical failures. But about 30,000 people die every year from auto accidents in this country and 90% of those are caused by human error. So accidents go down, insurance gets cheaper and lives are saved.

If it's privately owned, and used in public, then you insure it. If it's commercially owned, then the commercial entity would insure it. Not sure why that would make you sad as frick, am I misunderstanding your point?

if you think insurance premiums will go down you're delusional. New way to insure profits for insurance premium collectors, ugh, I mean, ugh, insurance companies.
It's all going to get shoved up our arse in the name of safety, then We'll foot the bill to keep these things running and they'll not pay out when the sky high scheduled maintenance on this shite is not followed to the tee.

What will the police do when they can't pull people over and search their car because of not using a turn signal to change lanes or for weaving in traffic?

Jeez you guys have a cynical outlook on the future....
I assume that the commercial companies like uber and Google will insure themselves, making that cost essentially zero. Then once the statistics start showing lower pay outs for insurance companies, they'll lower rates just because they can and the market will force them to.

Hopefully they'll all spend their time on issues that will help their communities more than extort money. Or maybe they'll all jerk each other off, I don't know I don't have a crystal ball.

I have more faith in a computer than that pilot, or subway operator or any human driver.
It will be a weird transition but it won't take long. Imagine how weird it would be to hear someone say "I only trust paper maps", that's how weird your concern will sound in ten years.

you probably wouldn't own one if you live in a city.
If you did you would want insurance because the benefit of owning it would be to loan it out to ride sharing services while you aren't using it.

They do. I was listening the interview with Uber CTO and he said this is one of the benefits.
They detect pot-holes and send the info to other cars so that they will avoid them.
