I don't usually go into the office unless there are meetings, but today is the one day of the year I always go. It's great to see the production guys, forklift operators, lab techs, and office staff all smiling and feeling good about their $4-$6K bonus' that hit their banks this morning.

I was more pissed off at the hospital administrators that slashed our staffing to save the hospital money due to our supposed "budget" crisis. Then come to find out that those same higher ups get six figure bonuses if they can reduce costs at our hospital. They frick over the staff and couldn't even give us any kind of meager holiday bonus or even just pay us time and a half if we were actually working the holidays(they took that away...again because of the "budget crisis").
Bottle this emotion and use it to impel you into starting your own gig where you control everything. You can pay yourself any amount of bonus you decide. Happiness ensues.

They switched ours this year from around Thanksgiving to after the new years so they can better determine the profits.

Are yall a bunch of trashy salesman?
Real professional baws dont get the Christmas bonus, we are just paid handsomely for our work throughout the year.
Yeah, go tell that to the Ivy League graduates working on Wall Street. I'm sure they're all just a bunch of trashy non-professionals to you, but when they receive their five-figure bonuses I don't think they'll give a shite about your opinion.

I had a friend get a jar of homemade BBQ sauce from his employer one year. Like in a Mason Jar. Like that was it.
I know it's the thought that counts and bonuses shouldn't be expected, but a jar of BBQ sauce?

I'm not sure that this advice means anything to some one whose career is nursing.

Oh when I say a five-figure bonus I'm referring to the younger bucks still in their mid-late 20s. Obviously it goes well beyond that, but my point remains that bonuses aren't solely reserved for "trashy sales people."

Always got at least a couple of grand, was told this year we were going to do a profit share in January which could result in a larger bonus. Company was sold yesterday

Thinking in scarcity and not in abundance! So, nurses are incapable of running a business?
It's this type of thinking that keeps people in ruts complaining about the Christmas bonuses they didn't get.

No Christmas bonuses at my current job. My boss usually gave me a nice gift. But I have a new boss this year. No idea, and it really doesn't matter.
At my last job, I started in July that year. Christmas bonuses were based on years of service. Anyone that started during the year was capped at $1k. So I got that the first year. 2nd year was capped at $2.5k. So I got that. 3rd year was supposed to be around $4k-5k depending on your department. As I wasn't a revenue producer, I was expecting to be closer to $4k. This wasn't some big secret, the owners talked about it and it had been that way for years. Until they had a really bad year. They put in a hiring freeze, no raises for anyone, and the Christmas bonus was set at an even $1k for everyone. Been there 10 years, you get a grand. Been there 4 months, you get the same. Rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

OK, if your employer would ultimately pay you 100k / year for your services, would you rather get it over the course of the year with no "year end "bonus", or get paid a salary of $90k and get a $10k bonus at Christmas time?
I'd choose the former, but of course, I'm saying this as one who never got more than a ham for Christmas.

Have you ever heard of an independent nurse running her own hospital or medical practice? I don't think this is how the industry is set up. There is a lot of regulation and nurses can't set up a practice like a doctor. Telling someone to abandon their career field entirely because they think they have a shitty boss is a little drastic, no?

I'm always amazed at this thread every year. It's crazy, in the current business climate, the amount of people here that get north of $1,000 bonus. Most seem to be in the $4-$6K range.

Had a similar question proposed to me last year. I wanted it as salary because I figured they could easily take away my bonus the next year, but it would be much more of a slap in the face to cut my salary. Similarly, I now had a base salary that would be easier to prove to a prospective employer than a discretionary bonus.

Bill Bourne, an Rn, founded and ran Amedisys. Just one example.
Many more I'm sure.
It can be done and has been done.
Or you can simply sit around and complain about your Christmas bonus.
