I personally witnessed an exchange of crawfish for cash yesterday just south of Eunice. Two sacks, $7.50/lb… $510 cash handed over. I was told by the farmer they are catching crawfish at a rate they normally would in December. Shells are softer than normal as well.

Too much saltwater can kill vegetation the crawfish eat and also kill the crawfish too

The beginning of the season saw low water levels in the Basin. Since then the Miss River has raised to Action Level (stage below Flood Stage). By law 30% of the flow at Old River is diverted to the Basin so there is ample water in the Basin for crawfish. FTR the Miss River was 2' lower than present this time last year.
The big issue however is how many crawfish died in the mudholes during the drought this past summer/fall. That is where the damage was done.
FWIW, my BIL who fishes quit running his traps for the next couple weeks because he was seeing a lot of crawfish with eggs so he figures to let them drop them.

Yep the season is a good 2 months behind. Think of this basically being December. The catch will increase as the weeks go by. The only bad thing is it likely won’t extend past June, because of the summer heat will force them all to bury no matter if you have an abundance of them.

1. The tails in the store are from last year
2. The smallest crawfish go to peeling plant and most years are are .30 a pound

The drought affected everyone. I know plenty of guys in St. Landry that aren't catching shite because most of the crawfish in their fields basically cooked in the ground last summer.
It's amazing how some of you seemingly can't live without mudbugs with as much as ya'll bitch about the prices...

We had record heat and record drought. It’s kinda normal that a creature in that environment would be negatively impacted

Some farmers who don’t have deep water wells have to pump surface water. Surface water comes from bayous that that flow to the Gulf of Mexico. When the water levels reach the lows they did this past summer the salt water creeps in. So when it was so dry this summer you either don’t pump or take a chance and pump saltwater. Either way it’s not a good situation.

Many crops, especially rice, cannot tolerate any salt. Once the salt water gets in the field the salt binds with the soil and can take years to flush out.
You may have heard of conquering armies salting the land so enemies could not grow crops (Romans and Carthage). Not sure how much crawfish they ate in Carthage…

Yep that’s the problem with taking a chance and pumping saltwater on your fields. It has a long lasting effect even when you get plenty of rainwater to flush the bayous out, if the saltwater leeches into the ground that ground is ruined a for a while.

they always have excuses every single year no matter if it's legit or not legit (with NOT legit mostly being the case).
they want it to be a "bad" year, then the public should make it a bad year and not buy anything. of course that won't happen because there are still enough stupid people who will always pay outrageous prices, but it would be nice if people would give them what they want.
