Hopefully it never ate any wires, or got to the air filter.

If you have a garage carbon monoxide the shite out of it

It will eventually eat your wiring harness and you'll be properly screwed.

Reminds me of a backpacking trip in British Columbia...
I get back to my car after 4 nights around Mt Robson and it's like Dirty Mike and the Boys had been in my trunk, worked their way into the passenger compartment and out under the hood. I don't know if I accidentally locked a squirrel in the trunk while I was gearing up or what, but it was a mess when I got back.
frickers ate the ends off of two boxes of granola bars, chewed through the back dash and seemingly nested in the hood insulation to sleep off their sugar buzz. Emptied the entire car in a parking lot and never found the culprit. As far as I know, he, she or they rode back to Louisiana with me.

This happened in 2002, so if any plague is involved, it's slow developing.

Rat in the car eh? Ok, now you're talking my language.
Get a second rat. Tie a string around it. Those rats will become codependent and then you yank it out and the second rat will follow.
If that doesn't work you may need to bring in a third rat.

Peppermint oil (not peppermint extract) on cotton balls throughout the engine compartment and the interior.

Mothballs for a couple of weeks ought to do the trick. Keep an eye on your engine. They get under there and literally start eating on the wiring. Can cause you several hundred dollars worth of damage if you're not careful.
They are more likely to go for the engine in cold weather as it stays warm for a bit after you shut the engine off.

Did you have to declare them when you went through customs?

See if you can find a cat to put in there, the more feral the better.
