That's what I don't get. Computers are cheap. Why doesn't someone just set a machine up somewhere in the corner of a math department and just let it run forever calculating pi? There's definitely something here I don't understand.

The simplified answer is that the computer doesn't have as many bits of accuracy required to do a calculation for that long and that accurate. There's a lot of fancy math underneath it to make it work.
If you're doing real work just use arctan(1)*4 and lead a normal life.
