frick Goodwill, ask local churches if they know anyone in need of furniture before giving it to someone who is going to re-sell it.

Pretty sure they don't take mattresses. At least I hope they don't. That would be beyond nasty.

I hope this is a joke. The purpose of goodwill is to provide jobs for those who need it and provide goods to people who normally can't afford them.

I tried to have the Salvation Army pick up good furniture. The people they sent made a BS excuse not to take it because they were too lazy to carry it.

not so much anymore, they're pretty much not a non-profit operation anymore and are pretty picky about what they will take

I don't know about Goodwill, but I know the Bridge House is rather picky about what furniture they will accept.
They've rejected a few pieces in the past I tried to give to them. Luckily they were all gone within an hour or two via my second option, the curbside donation route. Of course, that doesn't come with a tax receipt. Oh well.

I tried to donate a couch once and wanted them to pick it up because I didn't know anyone with a truck. They do it, but they said it would be few weeks.
I bet if you post it on facebook or Craiglist you could find someone who needs it or knows of someone who does that will pick it up that day.
