I'm going on a trip soon to nola with some friends and we are staying in the warehouse district. We will most likely be walking to and from the french quarter. I'm trying to scout out the city before going so I know what areas to avoid that might be sketchy. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Hopefully you have a fat life insurance policy. Unlikely you leave the city alive.

If in that area, I would say avoid canal street at night. Just cross it, don’t walk along it. Also, nothing good happens on the early blocks of Bourbon Street.

You’ve certainly come to the right place for sound advice on NOLA.

Note it only shows the most recent 500 (it hid about 200 more)

Good luck!

If by soon you mean within the next two to three months, that is going to be a hot walk, even at night.

Real talk:

You’ll be fine. Don’t get smashed and act like idiots. Don’t get smashed and walk around at 3am.

In all honesty, there aren’t many “good/bad” areas of New Orleans when it comes to the Quarter and downtown. It’s all intermixed. A few blocks will be okay and then a few blocks are suddenly areas you have no desire to be in. You will see rough looking dudes all throughout the Quarter. You’ll see plenty of other tourists having a good time.

Just don’t be an idiot. And don’t be an idiot at 3am.

Avoid the area south of Lake Pontchartrain and east of the 17th Street Canal.

You’ll probably find what you’re looking for in the blocks of Bourbon Street just before Lafites Blacksmith Shop

The issue is NOLA can get back from one block to the next. So we would have to see the place.

But the WHD is all pretty good, not really anything to worry about. Its a little bit of walk from the WHD to the FQ...but why would you want to be in the FQ anyway? It fricking blows.

There are way better places to go.

Sage advice from the Earlster

Skip the first block or two of Bourbon, take Royal or something then cut over.

Or just go Uptown, MidCity or to Frenchmen instead

After 10:00, the crowds in those areas changes quickly and dramatically.
As long as you keep between Bourbon Street and the River, you should be mostly safe.
When you see people getting in trouble is when they get way too drunk and wander off too far from the tourist crowds.

Do not go past Bourbon Street at night! You will get in trouble quickly.

For a first timer, just keep around where the numbers are on this map.

It’s a goddamn shame such warnings are necessary. No reason why the entire FQ can’t be completely safe. It’s a real shame what Canal Street has been allowed to turn into.

Maybe it's just me getting old but I would be out of the FQ before midnight. And maybe well before if I had to walk back to the WD.
