1608 -John Smith elected chief of the Jamestown colony's Town Council in the first recorded use of democracy by European colonists in the New World.
1864 - A 10 Day truce is declared in the Atlanta area by John Bell Hood (CSA) & William T. Sherman (GAR) to allow citizens of Atlanta to evacuate from the area.
1973- Chilean leader Salvador Allende dies (allegedly at his own hand) during a military coup in Santiago.
1985 - Cincinnati Reds player/manager Pete Rose gets his 4,192 MLB hit, passing Ty Cobb for most career hits.
2001 - 9/11 Attacks in the US using four hijacked commercial aircraft result in 2,996 direct casualties and thousands more injuries.

Well I just typed a post with the standard well wishes and my word of the day....I used the word 'myriad' and showed the differences when using it as a noun or an adjective...then the post went out to the secret places and never returned...I blame Irma.
