It's a felony requiring a 15 year registration as a sex offender if the age is greater than 2 years between them since the student is at least 17.

So you think High school teachers should be able to prey and manipulate students and then the moment they turn 17 be able to legally have sex with them? None of that seems wrong to you?

If the young person involved is at least the age of consent for the state (17) then there should be no criminal proceedings as said young party can legally consent to sexual relations
HOWEVER
I believe high school teachers should be forbidden to have sex with students regardless of age. It is too complicated. Sure a 17 year old is able to understand and agree to sex if they want. But what if the other party involved implies manipulating their grades if they do or don't comply? What if they hold them after class to flirt or pressure the student? They immediately have access to their house number, power over their grades, their future. They could have access to this person nearly 7 hours during a day Monday through Friday.
Yes the sex could very well be consensual, but the reasonings for consenting may be dubious.
I agree with age of consent being 16-17. Imagine being 20 and going to jail because your girlfriend is 17... Yet you've been dating since sophomore year of high school.
However allowing teachers to sleep with students in such a captive environment seems irresponsible. Imagine how many people would sign up just to openly flirt and try to seduce their students.
He should be fired and that's the end of it. Regardless of the genders involved. As long as it was consensual.

Article doesn't say how long ago the incident occurred or how often. I know this does happen, but wonder how often the complaint is really a type of retaliation. It's disturbing either way.

Would it change your opinion if the teacher didn't "prey" on the student?
What if she was just a little whore and went to his house after school?
I'm not saying that happened in this case... just food for thought.
For the Record: I don't think a teacher/educator should ever be allowed to date or have a relationship with a student because of the complications and uncertainties that are involved.
