Police Say Salt Lake man stabbed dog during fight with girlfriend

Derringer John Dade, 37, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated cruelty to an animal, public intoxication, assault, threatening to use a weapon in a fight and making a threat of violence.

Salt Lake police responded to a report of a domestic violence incident in progress on Tuesday. "The victim … stated that (Dade) had been drinking all morning and was intoxicated," according to a police booking affidavit.

Dade had told his girlfriend that "he wanted his dog to sit with him on the couch, then became aggressive when the (woman) said no," the affidavit states.

Dade "grabbed the dog and started to slam the dog on the ground, then grabbed a kitchen knife and started to stab the dog near the face. The victim stated that he stopped because the knife broke," according to the affidavit. "The victim stated that they were yelling at each other while he was stabbing the dog and he yelled, 'Get out,'" and threatened to beat her.

The woman said she didn't want to leave because she was concerned about the dog, but Dade pushed her out.

After Dade was arrested, the pit bull was taken to a local vet clinic for treatment. Police say the injuries were not life-threatening.
