Oh, and the Sound Sleeper app for your phone was a lifesaver for us. Many different white noises to help you newborn sleep. My daughter loved the "womb" one for the first few weeks. Now the "vacuum cleaner" one gets it done. :inb4waytooeasyjokeismade:
She sleeps fine without the noises, but that first week or two, the app was extremely helpful in keeping her calm

Buy a quality camera for pictures/video and get an external hard drive for storage.
Most kids these days are going to have limited accounts of their childhoods other than a few shaky portrait mode 15 second videos. It's a shame.

Huh? Kids today will have way easier access to quality pics form their childhood compared to our generation.

Tell the Doc you want to cut the umbilical cord. Down the road you can tell the kid, I brought you into this world and I can take you out.
Eta: I cut all 3 of my kids cords
Congrats

I think he meant videos not pictures

My only advice (as I'm about 4.5 months into this) is to get your kid on a routine asap. It's wonderful for your sleep, sanity, and overall planning out each day.

I guess it depends on the family, but home videos are basically non existent for most.

I guess I'm failing to see what a nice camera is going to accomplish that a phone won't. You bringing a tripod with you everywhere?
Kids child hoods today are way more documented. I wish mine was this documented.

Don't put the scented vaseline on his circumcision
The hospital gave us some kind of gauze type wrap that was soaked in vaseline that we used for the first two days. I was not prepared for how red/raw/angry looking his little unit would be. The doctor told me that I would be more traumatized than the little fella would be seeing as how he won't remember it

Sorry bro, I'm in proud dad mode myself right now. Just gotta call from school and little P won an award at his science fair. Kinda hard to shite on being a dad when you're grinning ear to ear like an idiot.

This. A few weeks after our child was born we went out and got a quality camera with 4k video and it is one of the best investments we've made.

make yourself vomit every time you have to change a diaper...eventually you'll never be asked or expected to do it again

But then realized I set the bar too high

For me it was a commitment to actually documenting things "properly". For example, I video often and for much longer periods of time than my friends with phones only. The quality is also exceptional and I'm much more inclined to store the videos properly.
I can't tell you how many pictures/videos I've lost over the years when my phone was stolen, broken, lost, etc.
I also don't consider posting a picture or video to Facebook as an adequate way to store it for any long period of time.

Cherish your chances to get some sleep, especially in the first few months
