I am not going to read the previous eight pages but will add this as someone who has worked in the medical field and practiced medicine for twenty years.

I have known army medics who were better medical providers than doc in the box MD's. I have known MD's who were far and away the smartest human beings I have ever met. I have known nurses that keep patients alive after Doctors screw up. They call it "PRACTICING" medicine for a reason. A couple of letters behind their name have little to do with how good they are at providing care. Never be afraid to ask questions and challenge their findings. If they know what they are doing, they will answer your questions to your satisfaction. If they get mad or can't answer, run don't walk away.

Agreed, all of the Urgent Care's that have popped up around Lake Charles are filled with NP.

all the Urgent Care's around here are the same, hell you can't even go to the ER without seeing a PA

I'm a lawyer, and I'd go to a paralegal for many things he or she would know better than I.

Multiple reasons. They have been conditioned by people like you to believe that any negative medical outcome should have financial liability attributed to it.
yea, I love how Docs want to just "practice medicine" on people's lives and livelihood, and always bitch about lawyers, when we are the only ones providing an oversight and watching out for the common man.

Not reading that many pages. The NP's I have seen are fine, but they just order way too many tests, labs, and consults. The medical care ends up costing considerably more than seeing a physician.

No doubt. Y'all are universally perceived as pillars of society, and looked up to by all for your commitment to fairness for.

Nevermind all that media that places you among the most disrespected professions. I'm sure you have many more redeeming qualities than politicians, prostitutes, and car salesmen do. You just have an image problem. Some good PR on what you REALLY do should clear that right up.

ETA: I'm really just talking out my arse b/c I know alot of good people that are attorneys. Even some good medmal attorneys. But it's naive, ignorant, or both, to assume that medmal law in the US hasn't been a key cost driver for healthcare. Defensive medicine and overutilization is a legit, real issue for cost control efforts to target. But certain lobbies get a bit pissy when discussing any tort reform. There is no affordable healthcare in this country until A) Tort reform of some sort happens, that will result in decreased overutilization (i.e. docs can ration care w/out fear of suits) or B) The only provider is the government (i.e. govt rations the care), and you and your colleagues are screwed.

Wow, this thread. Not even sure where to start with all of the BS.

Mid level providers are unfortunately necessary but perform very poorly without good supervision.

Not to mention, the schooling is often inadequate and poorly standardized. Most take online courses and do much fewer clinical hours than PA students, much less MDs.

Disagree 100%. I would much rather have a np than a doc. NPs listen and ask questions, docs do not...they make up their mind and thats that. Much rather have a NP for the office visits. ER is a different matter.

You talking about primary care stuff or specialty stuff?

There are some paralegals that I would trust more than certain lawyers. There are some NPs that I would trust more than certain doctors. All about knowledge and experience. NPs tend to have more time to listen and diagnose than many physicians, and do seem to be as motivated by the $.

wouldn't. The way you have to get into medical school is so full of fake hurdles, only someone vain enough to chase the status of being Medical MD would go through all the headache.

An intelligent person can pick another field that has good income potential without all the barriers of entry. So a person willing to go through all of it is just self-absorbed status whore.

As a soon to be MD who is going into medicine because of a love of the medical field and helping others, this has to be the dumbest thing I've ever read on the OT, which is quite an accomplishment. Oh, and go frick yourself.
