This is pretty egregious and a bad look on the surgeon. The surgeon often meets with you just before the surgery and there are all of these confirmation fail safes in place to prevent things like this from happening. I wonder what his thought process was in doing this?

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - An Iowa woman is suing a South Dakota surgeon and his practice for wrongly removing one of her kidneys. The lawsuit filed by Dena Knapp alleges that Dr. Scott Baker erroneously removed her healthy right kidney instead of removing an adrenal gland and a mass on the gland during a surgery in Sioux Falls in 2016. The Argus Leader reports the lawsuit alleges the erroneous surgery resulted in an incurable and progressive kidney disease in Knapp's remaining kidney that has caused pain and mental distress. Knapp eventually had a second surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, to remove the gland and mass. Baker did not immediately return a call for comment. The federal lawsuit also names The Surgical Institute of South Dakota, where Baker is partner. The institute declined comment.

I thought they marked the kidney with a sharpie before surgery in order to avoid this?

I’m sure there’s more to the story.

Whoa, this gland and mass is shaped just like a kidney! Weird!

well, maybe if they were supposed to remove a kidney they would mark it.

And she had a second surgery to romove the correct problem.
At least she went to Mayo for that and not some mom and pop knife shop

I wonder if it was a misdiagnosis. Dr says it's the right kidney, takes it out, come to find out it wasn't the problem, now she's suing.
ETA - From another article:
quote:
According to paperwork filed in U.S. District Court, on Oct. 5, 2016, Baker was set for surgery to remove her right adrenal gland and an associated mass.
Knapp claims in the filing Baker not only failed to remove the gland and associated mass, but instead removed her right kidney.
The filing claims Baker told Knapp her kidney had been removed, but did not tell her he didn't remove the gland and associated mass.
Six days after the surgery, the filing claims Knapp was told the adrenal gland was still inside and additional surgery was needed.
She went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. to have the adrenal gland and associated mass removed.

My dad got me when I came out of surgery for my knee when I was 21. I was still loopy from whatever they gave me before the surgery (valium I guess). The did a spinal block, but I fell asleep during the surgery. When I came to in the recovery area, the spinal block was still working and he told me they had to amputate my leg from the knee down. I freaked out a bit until he started laughing. The hospital where I had the surgery did not have the most sterling reputation so I was relieved that they operated on the correct knee.

This is why you don't sign up for those Groupon surgeries, kids.

It's possible. When my dad had meniscus surgery, they took some extra cartilage out that really jacked up his knee. However, in the consent forms they had you sign, the surgeon could make "other corrections" if he felt necessary. Curious what the consent forms on this said.

That he was supposed to remove the kidney?

Ya think?
She will... and should... get paid quite handsomely. There is simply no excuse for this whatsoever.

There’s another article with more information
quote:
Dena Knapp was supposed to have an adrenal gland and a mass on the gland removed during the Oct. 5, 2016 surgery, according to her lawsuit. But instead, Dr. Scott Baker removed her healthy right kidney. Baker was informed later that day by the pathology department at Avera McKennan Hospital that he removed the kidney and failed to remove the adrenal gland.
But on Oct. 7, he told Knapp that he hadn’t heard from pathology, the lawsuit says. Baker called Knapp on Oct. 11 and told her that part of the adrenal gland was still inside her body and that he “did not get everything,” the lawsuit says. He advised her that she would have to undergo a second surgery.

That kidney probably ended up in Saudi Arabia.

I knew a guy from Orlando that got cancer in one of his balls. The surgeon removed the wrong one. He still had to have the cancerous one removed.
He then drank and Oxy'ed himself to death.
