Mixed martial art does not have anything to do with UFC other than its used in combat on that show. It is a skill like any of the combat art. Think Wrestling and the WWF.
And if its done in completion it most certainly would have rules.

The very FIRST UFC had no eye-gouging nor biting. The rest was fair game. There were some brutal punches/kicks to back of the head and while guys were down and some nutpunches back then. Now they have a lot of rules for good reason but it's NOT nearly the same as a martial art designed for life or death arena( a battlefield or being attacked by some thugs when you leave the movie theater with your wife and kids).

I remember some of those... the first UFC's were fricking awesome. They didn't have weight classes either. Any size, any martial arts discipline... didn't matter.
That's back when Royce Gracie was winning everything.

Two most vivid memories for me are
1. that tall arse kickboxer kicking that sumo rasslers tooth out while he was on the ground.
FOUND IT
Video from fight. This isn't legal anymore in UFC
2. Gracie beating Dan Severn FROM the ground with Dan standing over him. That was the eye-opener to submissions there like HOW THE frick ? WHAT THE frick just happened?
