He and Henley definitely tried to screw Don Felder. Problem was, Felder was actually a member of Eagles LTD (and an equal to Frey and Henley with each having 1/3 from buying out Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon; Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmidt were band members and "employees" but not members of the corporation). They ran him out of the band and had an undisclosed settlement after years of litigation. When Howard Stern had Felder on and asked him about it, he said he couldn't talk about it. But he hinted that he still got paid every time they played a show without him.
Still, the best story was right before Bernie Leadon left the band. Frey was ranting and raving about how they were going to do this and then do that for the next records, etc. Leadon had enough and poured a beer on Frey's head and said, "You need to chill out, man!"
Bernie was NOT like Randy Meisner. Frey would have gotten his clock cleaned if he'd tried to fight back.
Like you said, incredibly talented but a major jerk. But a lot of great artists (i.e.: Roger Waters) are...

That's not even objectively true.
Secret info: I've taken all of my wives (except one) to see The Eagles in concert.

It's awesome, especially the part about Joe Walsh trashing the hotel room with John Belushi.

Ironically enough, I was singing you belong to the city yesterday! I didn't even know it was Glenn Frey's birthday

That's a banger for sure.
Saying that, Henley had a better voice than Frey. Dude could sing.

His son, Deacon, looks and sounds so much like him.
The Eagles are still really good live.

I think you mean subjectively, but I think it more accurately describes the "I hate the Eagles" crowd. They don't hate them, they're just disappointed that those ingredients didn't make something even better than they did.

I once attended a private 2000 person concert with Sting Not that it's relevant to this, but I wanted to bring it up,
but still those old guys could really sing those 70s and 80s bands back when people actually sang songs
they were magnificent
I remember when Herb Alpert was Latino music

I think the Eagles were a great band, top 5 for me but not my favorite. The documentary however is easily my favorite band documentary of all-time. It has a ton of original footage from the '70s including tremendous interviews with all members from bands hey day as well as current. They air dirty laundry, admit mistakes, and hold grudges. They have a lot of interview and concert footage of other musicians from the '70s as well. The cinematography is great and it flows chronologically without bogging down.
I was in my pre-teen thru the 1970's. I can hear the first few notes of any one of a dozen of their songs and it immediately sparks memories of a random summer day or evening from that decade. No other band does that for me so consistently.

The Doobie Brothers were well into their career and getting solid air play when I went to a birthday party sleepover when I was late elementary ager. We were all half sacked out on the floor of the living room, a dozen white kids, and 4-5 black kids
The Midnite Special comes on and we all see Michael McDonald (had no idea at the time what his name was. just that he was "the dude singing". To a person we were shocked he wasn't black. Woke up kids parents yelling and pointing.
