I live in a retirement town and you wouldn't believe the sh*t old white people throw away. I flip old mowers and weedeaters all the time. My generator came from the curb and still had the lowes tags on it.
Most old people nowadays have no idea what it's like to work to fix something instead of just spending money on something new and throwing the old away.

No, because it doesn't exist. OP made this up. He's a know-it-all blowhard.

I'm with you and OP. I've picked up things that I was curious what was wrong with them and if I could repair. A homesite chainsaw comes to mind. Neighbor sat it out on the curb with a new bar and chain. All it needed was a primer bulb and fuel line. I call it my lil limb cutter. I didn't need it because I have a Stihl farm boss, but I enjoyed the challenge of diagnosing and making it run again.

My dad loved doing this. Old man could fix anything. I have a box fan he fixed 40 years ago still works. Guess that fan will outlive me.

IRL 8-ish though.

I always find these threads to be funny, because there’s always an element of condescension behind it. You can see it in the OP. If someone throws something away, it’s always because they’re lazy or dumb.

My neighbor gave me an Ryobi electric push mower. I watched a you tube video and thought I could fix it. I bypassed every damn safety mechanism on the SOB and it still would stop running every 3 feet.
Bought a used gas powered and it runs great.
Other people’s trash doesn’t always work out.

Small engine carburetor issues is the main reason why I switched to electric yard equipment.

When we lived in Germany military folks were PCSing constantly and they would leave all manner of shite on the curb. I spent a good bit of time collecting that stuff and posting it for free on the base website so incoming folks could pick up something they had to leave behind. It became so popular it is still going on on that base. Most people prior to this would put the stuff up for sale...I gave it away...as far as I know most of its being given away still.
We live in a military community now and this is learned behavior that military families share. They do the same thing in our neighborhood and I do the same thing but most of the stuff I take off the curb now I sale because when I was giving it away people not in anyway associated with the military would claim it and it would be on Marketplace before they left the driveway. The military families have access to Walmart here also and did not have access to Walmart in Germany so there isn't as much need here as there was overseas. I can't count the number of pretty high end treadmills and ellipticals I have picked up off the curb in our neighborhood. Not gym quality stuff but Peleton and Precor home stuff is not unusual. Most of them will last about a weekend on marketplace for around $250. I have 6 gas grills less than 90 days old on the back porch as we speak LOL...2 of them aren't even fully assembled, never been used. I should have had them on Marketplace last weekend but I got busy but $100 a piece for them and they will last about a day and all I have to do is roll them to the house. They will be in demand shortly as PCS season is coming to a head around us. Lawn mowers, TVs, tools....all manner of shite. If someone from the neighborhood wants it I will give it to them but otherwise I sale it now.... I ain't proud LOL....

Dryer. Broken element. $50 fixed.
Washing machine. Broken pump. $30. Fixed.
When I was 17 years old I could pick up used washer and dryers around Atlanta for the price of loading them and hauling them off. Even in 1981 a matching set would fetch $250 and for $50 more I would deliver them and hook them up...and more times than I could count I'd get another $50 for adding the right dryer cord or outlet or for around $150 add a circuit for the dryer. You can, today, fix just about anything wrong with a low end washer and dryer for around $50...the high end electronic ones are expensive to fix but simple side by sides with a couple of wash cycles and drying settings are simple machines and almost bullet proof. They are worth about $500 in my area without delivery. I haven't done it in years but over the years I would do it as a side hustle and always made some cash doing so...never a pile of money but I never really did it on a large scale. Its still a pretty good side hustle if you have some mechanical ability and are physically able to move them around and load them. It would take Almos no effort at all for me to clear $2000-$3000 a month cash working 20 hours or so a month doing it....folks will buy them almost as fast as you can list them. Even when you get the rare one that is beyond repair its worth as much or more in parts than it is as a laundry machine. Its a pretty good side hustle if you like to tinker with shite.

Don't bet on it, you'd be amazed at the ways people will use that 1980s wall unit from Walmart made out of particle board. Outside of the hoarders they would not be wasting their time picking it up if they weren't making some money on it. It is hard to imagine but to a lot of folks in the US $1000 a month in extra cash is a significant source of income....

Some of us have the money to not GAF and buy new. My time is way too valuable to be fricking around with carburetors. Sorry you’re poor.
What if the OP enjoys fixing shite and has the time to do so? There are more ways to be poor than not having money...for example if you are too busy to do something you enjoy, like fixing a $100 weed whacker, you are as poor as the person who can't afford a $100 weed whacker.
I see poor bastards commuting to work every day in $80k pickup trucks driving 20 miles over the speed limit and passing other commuters in blind curves because their poor asses will get run off if they are 30 seconds late to work. There are more ways to be poor than not having money....
