Just a tip for you... if it's a history class, be careful about the comparisons you make between Rome and the U.S. make sure you know your comparisons well. They seem really similar on first blush, but the conditions in the Roman Empire at the end where pretty unique to Rome itself. If you really want to impress a Roman history teacher, compare what Rome used to be to what it changed into. The Roman of the 300's B.C. in no way resembled the Roman of 400 A.D. How did they get from A to B, especially considering what a severe and inwardly focused people Romans were at the start of their growth outward?
If it's a speech class, the teacher probably won't give a shite.

Show some scenes from the film "Caligula".
That'll do it.
IMO people talk too much about the fall and not enough about why it lasted so long.

Maybe start with whatever was the most startlingly "modern" thing about Rome

Record a pre-speech session and share it in this thread so we can help.

Always relax your audience with a joke.
"Did you hear about the happy Roman? ..."

In the waning days of Rome, barbarians stood hungry at the gates. In a futile attempt to appease them, they put one descended from the hordes upon the throne.
History...has proven that strategy unwise.

It's a public speaking class. Informative speech. I know my history well enough to write the paper. I have the speech written. Just trying to improve my opening statement.

"Comparisons in modern-day America and the fall of the roman empire of the European middle-ages seem very similar, which you will be able to decipher without my help within the next few minutes. However, it was a much different time which made for equally different circumstances. Although one thing is for sure, they were both the military superpower of their time."
My opening statement as of now.

Boring. Awful. Terrible.

How can I start it off to catch audiences attention? Any ideas?
Start off with miscegenation.
Rome was the world power until they invited in others of non-Western origin and interbred with them, and this was the key factor responsible for their downfall.
The pure Germanic Visigoths came in and were easily able to defeat the self-defeated mongrels due to their strength in solidarity and in-group priming. At this point it was a cakewalk for the Visigoths and Norse/Celtic peoples to absolute victory.
Their body politic was poisoned with acceptance of the unacceptable under the guise of tolerance.
