I can speak in front of a group, no problem. Put an expectation and I fall apart.

I know the feeling.
Had to speak in Henderson once.
Same difference.

Start out with an absolutely filthy, inappropriate joke.
Not some lame ice breaker like Bullfrog suggested.

Move around, walk around , talk to the crowd, intermingle and make eye contact, and get personable visible responses.
Dont stand at a dam podium!!!

Contrary to many opinions I prefer not to over rehearse. Just be confident in your knowledge of the subject. Trying to remember material line for line will make you stumble whenever your mind goes blank. I was given this idea several years ago and it always works. I speak in front of groups twice a week and this always is my method. Don't over analyze something so easy.

use bullet point notes or slides to guide your knowledge based presentation
Check your audience/facility at the beginning for reception and feedback by use of a statement that requires a response.
example can the dude in last row hear me.
In Malaysia I was to give an orientation to 120 tech school graduates. I asked them if they had heard of Monica Lewinsky. The laughter that followed told me English and diction was good and they could hear me in back row

Depends on the person. Some can ad lib and others aren't good at it.

Very true, but I get paid anyway.
I've tried to incorporate some fun things into training to involve the employees.
Have a jeopardy game I made with cateogories of the material that people seem to like. Keeps them involved and having a decent time. Makes them remember the boring crap too.

Say a prayer before and watch God work His magic.

Take the attitude that you dislike everybody in the room. Works every time, but you have to force a smile.

If it makes you feel any better: no one will want to be there, half of them won't be listening and no one will remember anything you said. Seriously. These are all good things.

People have stage fright because they want to please the audience. It’s like fear of rejection. If you decide you don’t give a sh1t about any of them, it gets real easy. Hardest part is looking pleasant while doing it.

Practice in a mirror. You are not you. You are the awesome guy presenting. It's a character who happens to look like you. Play that character. Speak loudly and use hand gestures. Don't read slides off power point be funny but don't tell jokes. Be serious but make it light. Use facts and figures but don't drown them in numbers. Use quotes but only from obscure 16th century navigators. Rehearse like hell but don't memorize.
And KEEP IT SIMPLE NO MATTER WHAT.
