Was the gift for a special occasion? Birthday? Or just a random gift?

I wouldn't chip in - she wants the credit for giving the gift without footing the bill. These "everyone chip in" things can often lead to the gift purchaser making a profit if the cost isn't calculated out based on some split. Whole situation is dumb, i'd just ignore it and move on.

No.

frick that shite, if you didn't agree to chip in (and set a price limit) ahead of time, you don't owe a damn thing.

Screw that noise.

She's going to get all the glory for getting the gift and the rest of your team looks like schmucks.

Save your money and ask her for noods.

or just bring a gift from the team to give and don't ask for any money from anyone and show her up.

Did she say the gift was from the office / all of you? If she did I probably would just throw her $5-10. If she took all credit I would not give her anything.

Usually I would agree and just throw in money to not look like an a-hole, but this situation is a bit ridiculous.

This doesn't just apply to gifts. It's to anything that ends in group funding. You work out selection and/or budget before hand or don't ask me for shite. Wife has a friend who is famous for this. Be it a tailgate grocery bill, flowers for a sick friend, hotel split, etc.. The particular friend finds out everyone is chipping in and finds the most expensive shite they can find, then sends an email with what everyone owes. I've put my foot down on that one after too many experiences. I can't see how anyone thinks they can ask for money without being fully upfront about it.

Ya i've had to deal with this when someone wants to cook out, i'm all for chipping in for food or whatever (usually this is established on the front end and not a "hey want too come over and eat" then getting a bill at the end) but don't send out some massive venmo request at the end which includes expensive wine and shite i didn't even want to drink.

My wife is always the one that goes buy the agreed upon present then nobody ever pays her back.

Why isn't she getting the money upfront and then deciding what to get based on that? That most office gift collections are done in my experience.

As for the original question, I would put in some money but tell the coworker that if she did it again like that again she will get no money from me.

Who got credit for the gift? Did she say this is from us or this is from me?
If she said from us just pay.

I had this happen to me once and said, " I have a gift for boss myself, would you chip in? "

She did not want to donate.

If she had, I would have gone out and bought some booze as a gift.
