The Te Papa Museum in Wellington nearby has a huge Colossal Squid on display. The mantle is enormous, much bigger in diameter than a Giant Squid's.

First time I ever ate calimari in a restaurant I told the people I was with that it tasted liked fried squid. I didn’t know then what the hell calimari was. I had eaten a lot of fresh fried squid though.

It is volcanic black sand in that location. NZ has some damn fine beaches in parts of the North Island

Instead of mountains and blue water, you get platforms and brown water. That being said, at least Grande Isle has sand.
