first off you are required to have a tag, its the law. States just allow a grace period in case you need to get a new tag. every state is different as far as grace period and requirement. But the law is you are required to have a tag

That sort of thing is why in my area there's a window of time where you can drive a car without a tag.
Well, every locale has different regulations, so your dad should follow them

My question is what is the law in TN
that you are required to have a tag. that is the law

does this same law apply to a car bought and registered in another state?
yes

The cop was literally handed a piece of paper showing when the car was purchased. C'mon now.
It doesn't matter if he showed proof of when the vehicle was purchased if he didn't have a temporary tag, that's the law in TN for purchasing a vehicle or moving from out of state

According to the TN DMV a temporary tag must be on the vehicle even if traveling through the state.
They are $5.50 and can be obtained at the DMV office.

So the Police are doing their job and give a warning instead of a ticket for not having a temp tag and you want to complain about them, WOW. Snowflake trigger alert.

You just show them the bill of sale and if you are in the 7 day or whatever it is window you are fine. Had this happen a couple of times buying used cars.
I guess it varies by state.

but I can't imagine why you'd drive around a car without any sort of plate and not expect to be pulled over.
I know 3 guys who do this around the BR area actually. They also get a new company truck every 2 years so they are always driving something looks new. The leave the dealer plate in place and drive on.

Cant imagine the reason either, but there are a bunch driving around N.O. and I never see them being pulled over. Must be some kind of asylum city for no tag cars.

Recently bought wife a car. They gave us a temp tag and said unlike past temp tags, the new ones can be traced. This was in LA. New tag was applied for by dealer, sent to us via postal mail by credit union.

What is the grace period in TN?
Look, I think the cop is well within his rights to pull someone over for not having a car tag. I think that based on the situation, it's more so a matter of what they "should" do as opposed to what they "can do," but it's the cop's prerogative. Now once he sees that the car was purchased a mere 48 hours ago, I would not expect anyone to be threatened with a ticket. Unless there is literally no grace period for this sort of thing whatsoever, what law was broken?

You can operate a vehicle in TN for 30 days with a temporary tag; the grace period for not having a permanent tag is. . . you can operate a vehicle in TN for 30 days with a temporary tag.

The law in TN that requires a temporary tag for 30 days

I don't know why other dealerships out of state sometimes don't do this, but all dealerships in TN provide temporary tags? Ok, that is understandable, but that is not the only way someone might acquire a car. Are there no provisions for driving a car without a temporary tag for any length of time? Seems like a pretty goofy way to screw people out of cash.
I wish I was given a temporary tag. My tag did not come in the mail until two weeks after I registered it because I got a specialized tag, and the courthouse did not have any in stock. They gave me the sticker and some paperwork that I assume would satisfy a cop, but I really didn't want to get pulled over in the first place. I drove that thing up and down a particular highway that Highway Patrol watch like hawks 5 days a week for two weeks and was never pulled over.

Your dad clearly wasn't heading to get a tag on his out of state trip.

You go to the tag office and either get a new tag or a temp tag

It is 5.50 in TN and likely isnt much more elsewhere.
You can go get a temp one at the DMV

I know that pulling some guys over for no tag didn't work out too well for that trooper in Brainerd.

He clearly wasn't trying to circumvent the law in either case. If he's gonna be threatened with a ticket in one instance, he should be threatened in the other.

Stop using this term. A cop letting someone go with a warning and telling them to fix their violation is not a "threat."
He did your dad a fricking favor. Be thankful and stop acting like a little bitch.

You're not going to convince me that anyone deserves a ticket for having the audacity to drive a car two days with no tag. He wasn't given a temporary tag or encouraged to purchased one when he bought the car, so in my mind his "violation" amounts to essentially not using a crosswalk to walk across the street.
Why is it such a novel concept for a police officer to act like a public servant and elaborate on the "violation" and explain what he can do to rectify the problem? Just because people aren't following the law doesn't mean they're actively trying to pull nefarious shite. Especially in a case like that, it was clearly just a misunderstanding.
Threatening someone with a ticket is essentially the same as saying, "I'm going to let you off this time, but next time we stop you, you're getting a ticket!!" This is the type of attitude that is all too common around cops.
Not threatening someone is saying, "In the state of TN, all motor vehicles require a license plate of some sort. You can pick up a temporary tag at the ____ for $5.50. Th next time we stop you, we will have to give you a ticket as it is the state law."
You see how those two scenarios say the same thing but carry drastically different connotations? It's not always about the message but also how you deliver it, and what your intentions are. The first guy comes off as a jerk with a superiority complex and the second guy comes off as someone who's legitimately trying to help and who really doesn't want to see you get hit with a ticket.
