This happened to my dad last weekend. He bought a new truck from a dealer on Thursday, but they didn't give him any kind of temporary tag or anything (I didn't get one either when I bought my new car). Where we live, I believe we have 7 days to purchase a new tag for the vehicle. I may be off on the number of days, but I know that we have some time between purchasing the car and buying the tag.

He made a potentially ill-advised decision to take the truck on a weekend trip to TN and was pulled over a police officer and was let off with a "warning," yet told that he would be issued a ticket the next time he was pulled over

Is this just an example of a cop being an asshat, or are there legit different rules for that sort of thing in TN?

Can't say what the law specifically says, but I can't imagine why you'd drive around a car without any sort of plate and not expect to be pulled over.

It's actually the law now in LA that you have to have a temp tag, even on a new vehicle, if I'm not mistaken. Bought a vehicle a while back and they made a point to give me a temporary tag because of this.

I hope that our police force has more efficient ways of occupying their time than pulling over some 60 year old dude in a shiny brand new truck for having no tag, but I get it. If the cop is literally handed a bill of sale showing where the truck was purchased not two days ago, is that really a legitimate reason to ticket someone?

In Georgia, I think they are required to put a 30 day temporary tag on the vehicle which has been my experience when buying my last 3 vehicles, but I am usually able to purchase my tags from the county tag office within about 7 days.

You can't plead ignorance for not following local law

For instance, oversized tires might be illegal in some states, but not in yours.

Just because it is legal at home doesn't make it legal when you are out of state.

Bottomline: your dad is wrong.

I'm just waiting on someone to tell me what the law is up there. That's why I made this thread

The cop certainly did not seem to know

You mean like being required to have a license plate while driving on public roads?

No, of course not....

Is there more to the story besides the OP? Seems like he knew it but chose not to give your dad a ticket.

I do believe that some states have a grace period to get a new license plate to avoid situations like this.

That doesn't mean you won't get pulled over or even ticketed, but in theory it's supposed to cover you once you get to court with proper documentation.

Still bullshite though.

What are you supposed to do? Ride a bicycle to the courthouse to purchase the tag?

That sort of thing is why in my area there's a window of time where you can drive a car without a tag.

My question is what is the law in TN and does this same law apply to a car bought and registered in another state?

If I'm a cop and have a shot at confiscating your vehicle. I'll take the shiny new truck over a 02 Kia

The cop gave him a pass for driving without the plate because it isn't the law.

He was being generous not an asshat.

Get a temporary tag.

Private seller? Figure out a way to not illegally drive on the road.

There may be a grace period, but i doubt a cop can tell just by looks.

The cop was literally handed a piece of paper showing when the car was purchased. C'mon now.

So then there likely isnt a grace period.

You need at least a temporary tag to operate a vehicle in the state of TN.
