I realized whatever I was trying to prove to myself or others by having these lofty goals, I no longer felt I had to prove.

Goals!! Never give up. That mentality of realizing dreams won’t come true doesn’t exist. You’re time on this earth is short go after it

Never too old to set goals and have dreams. Really miss triathlons personally, but still plenty to do to keep me active.

Dreams rarely come true without extremely hard work and a little bit of luck. You have to set realistic goals and work at them. And you have to allow yourself to evolve as time goes by. I don't owe my younger self a specific achievement or place in life. It's about the best path to happiness at any given time. What defines my dreams today isn't what I wanted for myself 20 years ago.

What do you need to prove and to whom? Maybe that's an important question to ask.

And occasionally you need to reflect on where you are, and try to recognize those important moments in life that you want to remember forever. If you are about my age, you have certainly had at least a few of those experiences that you'll take with you to the nursing home one day in your 90s. I doubt all of those fond memories are fully compatible with what you dreamed about as a child.

How do you mid 30s-40s baws deal with it?"

There is a hell of a lot of life to live after the years you've listed. Damn good years are still there to be lived. Learn to enjoy the everyday things in life. They are right before our eyes and often over looked.
I'm 61 and retired last March. I get up at around 3 AM every morning because I can't wait for the day to begin. I have several hobbies I can do in those early hours and the solitude is priceless. I love my life.

This is something that's really been bothering me lately. In the past, I've generally had some kind of goal or something I would strive toward. While I was watching a movie over the summer, it suddenly hit me that I haven't had that for about five years. Guess I had got tired of shite not working out. Been trying to refocus on something else, got other things to take care of first though. Sometimes I wonder if it's too late, or things too screwed up to worry about chasing after things like that.

Great post OP. I think about this often, my situation is a little different. I achieved a part of my dream early in my 20's, got to a certain level and didn't advance past that. That was 13 years ago, I have now gotten out of that profession, but still think what might've been. I had a good run and experienced many cool things, but didn't finish the way I wanted.

I mean, this seems like an overly harsh reaction to a simple question.

He’s probably meaning he regrets not trying something when he was younger and age eligible. Joining the military or majoring in something else in college come to mind as things I hear a lot of guys say.

The meaning of life is finding meaning in your life. Look for things that put a fire in your belly.

Also, "achieving your dreams" isn't always a good thing. Many, many folks devoted decades of their life to pursue a singular dream....only to find out that once they achieved it, they never actually wanted it at all. And where do you go from there?

I personally think that would be harder to take than never achieving the dream in the first place.

I have kids they are my main priority now.

It’s ok to look back and think what if’s but then you look at your kids and realize their your legacy. Not what you have or don’t have.

I’m comfortable and if I want something then I can go get it but my life is now having a roof over my head, a dependable ride, food in the fridge, the ability to go where I want when I want, a few luxury items, talking to my parents while I still have them, hunting, fishing, good beer, and my kids are taken care of.

My parents always said I didn’t have what it takes to be a windshield man and now look at me. It’s all about hard work and dedication

In seriousness, "dreams" is a form of abstraction and is how you live your life. I think that you accomplish dreams or succeed in life if you have a loving family, a good home, a steady job and a nice retirement plan. Extra credit if your house if paid off at a younger age and you have time to invest in other things such as a second, rental or vacation home.

People get too fixated on those lottery winners nowadays or the professional athletes contracts.
