quote:I set my desk phone to roll over to my cell. For years, I used to handle calls if I was taking a vacation day. My attitude was one of gratitude - I am able to do what I'm doing because of my job. Of course, my 24x7 availability was abused - mostly by my office. No one else in my office would dare call someone if they were on vacation, so why the frick am I doing it?
Do you answer emails/texts/calls on vacation?
Today, still at my same place of employment, I change my outgoing voicemail "I'll be back at the office on ____ and If you need anything call the front desk." and immediately turn off my phone.

We have a guy that always comes in an hour or two before his scheduled time. He can’t clock in until his scheduled shift. He isn’t working, but will help someone out if needed and ect. Sometimes he just sits in his truck until time. I asked him why he does it and he said he didn’t mind.
I got questioned by managers recently they’ve been building a case on him “slacking”. While it’s true, I think he knows it also and is maybe trying to kiss arse. Or maybe he has a shi*ty home life and it’s an escape. Either way, I believe his days are numbered if he doesn’t get with the program

Thats a very low level of expectation, which most of us men have crossed many times, yet you consider it "condescending."
That's disturbing within itself.
I can tell youve never really worked in a competitive environment.
Never fails, can't have a reasonable conversation about why, for most people, there should be systems in place to allow them to take time off without being harassed because someone is insecure about their place in a discussion.

I'm hesitant to call it that in a blanket statement
I don't know anyone that works a normal work week that can skip out and play golf unless they own their own business or they're at the top of the food chain. Personally, I work M-F, 8-5. If I'm asked to work anytime before or after those hours, I expect to be paid.

I'm surprised you don't make your own since you're so invaluable. Can't be delegating now.

It’s not always that simple.
I’m the one with approval authority. Policy and the feds require someone in risk to sign off on our deals.
Can I delegate that authority. Sort of. I can only delegate to someone in Risk and they cover different industry verticals. I’m not going to ask someone to sign off on an industry they know nothing about. And I don’t want to sign their deals.
We plan as much as we can in advance but these deals have a life of their own

It depends on who it is. If it’s middle management guys, those are people I work closest with, and they’re calling me for something only I would know. I don’t leave those guys hanging. If it’s upper management or a subordinate, I don’t answer the phone.

I wish. My job isn't at all like this.
I work 7a-4p 75% of the time, but I could get called at 3am or on a Saturday morning at any time. I also work late that other 25% for no additional compensation.

Also, everyone is replaceable in this working world. No matter how good you are at your job you are replaceable so thats another reason why i would not answer if i were on vacation
Some of us are uber competitive, some arent. Its easy to tell here.
If you arent, its fine. But dont get butthurt by those going balls to the wall.

If on vacation domestically I will take phone calls if they are absolutely needed. I don’t bring my lap top on vacation so it’s either a phone call or email to get something done. Preferably in the morning otherwise I’m likely drinking.
1000% this. If I’m on vacation you’ve got a brief window to get me in the morning just to keep me in the loop on anything pressing.

I just overheard him telling one of the managers(VERY loudly) that he would like to be able to enjoy his much needed vacation.
A team player is a winner. This guy is not a team player. blah blah blah
Seriously, why did he interact? I don't contact work at all when on vaca.

I started taking my lunch breaks in my truck because I was constantly being asked work related questions during my non paid hour. It takes me 5-10 minutes to eat my lunch in the kitchen and I'm off to my truck for the remainder.

Back on the job I had one boss who expected responses when I was on vacation and holidays. We were paid well, had the ability to take time off for personal issues when necessary (did not have to take a vacation day nor sick day), and got good bonuses so yeah it was ok.
One other boss I had for about 7 years always told us to take vacation, enjoy it, don’t check emails nor take calls once we gave proper notice of a vacation. He was the best!

I do, but they tend to take calls on the golf course.
My best friend has the "easiest" job in the world. Oilfield sales in Western Texas.
Nothing but golf, fishing and baseball, yet hes working all the time

So can every job that does not involve an immediate threat to someone's safety, and even in that case someone is usually delegated to be in charge. You think things don't come out of the blue with company finances? Teach someone else to handle it.
i think generally speaking we agree.
I don't work much on vacation, still check my emails/text in the morning to make sure nothing has blown up and forward stuff along if needed. We are talking a matter of minutes typically.
i am not making cold calls or collecting for a/r or anything else that can wait until monday

What's the OT's take on this? Do you answer emails/texts/calls on vacation?
Not usually, but it really depends. For example, I was out of the office on Monday for a funeral (not vacation), and was sent an email asking me to gather some info for a client by the end of the day on Tuesday, so yes I forwarded that email onto a couple of employees so that they could start putting it together on Monday, rather than me having to rush them on Tuesday.
If I'm on actual vacation for a week, it's not very likely that I will respond to an email, but again it just depends on the circumstance.

IMO that's different then the expectation that you answer calls at a clip that your PTO is no longer PTO like the OP was describing.
