Getting An "Angel Tree" kid Dollar Store Junk?

An acquaintance on FB posted a picture last night of her and her 10 yr old son wrapping presents and captioned it about how she's teaching her son to give back and what a wonderful feeling it is to adopt a kid from an Angel Tree at Christmas and know you're making their Christmas wonderful etc etc etc.
Well I look closely and the 3 or 4 things she bought are those crappy, generic Dollar Store toys. A plastic soccer ball, the no name plastic truck etc. Looks like maybe she spent $5 or $6. I just shook my head at her "Look What A Great Person I Am" post.
I know it's the thought that counts, but any kid on an Angel tree or whatever is already probably used to getting crappy Dollar Store toys. Go to Toys R Us and at least get them a small Lego set, a Tonka truck, an actual Franklin soccer ball or something. You can still find inexpensive toys at places other than Dollar Tree and the kid won't have such crappy gifts.
Edited to clarify they didn't actually adopt a kid. Just one of those Angel Tree kids.

My SOs adopted tree angel kid is getting better gifts than me this year.

Pretty sure it costs a lot to adopt a kid. She might have spent most of the Christmas gift money on adopting him. Your post is confusing but sounds like she just adopted him
Edit: other posters clarified you mean giving gifts to a poor kid for Christmas. I agree, giving them $10 of junk is pretty trashy

If spending $5-$6 on some random kid is paltry to you, why don't you adopt a few for Christmas?

Depends on the age of the child. If they're around 6-8 years old, opening the present and seeing what they got is the best part, so a larger number of cheap toys is a good idea.

I see your point, but it really depends on the kids. If they are young…they don’t know any better and will be happy with these gifts. If they are older…then I say your comments have merit. What concerns me with spending more on gifts for the older kids would be the idea that their mom/dad will return the gifts to Wal-Marks for cash/credik. That idea drives me nuts.

My GF and I gave to Toys For Tots this year. I bought a Razor scooter and she got a Baby Alive doll to donate.

Not everyone has the disposable income, but would still like to give back. Instead of judging why don't you do something instead of bitching?

I actually agree with the OP. If they can't do better than that maybe they are the ones who need to be adopted.

I guess that's a risk you take, but damn that would take some awful awful parents to take away gifts from their kid. I wouldn't let that deter you from trying to do good

Kid is supposed to be 8 or 9. I don't call 3-4 toys a large number and 8 and 9 year olds these days know when toys are cheap and crappy.
I do agree with the sentiment for younger kids. They just like toys & wouldn't know the difference, but I'd at least spend $20 or $30 on the kid.

I agree. But this same girl brags about her Michael Kors crap and they just came home from a Thanksgiving Cruise. Yes, obviously she's trashy
But, she has enough money to buy some decent stuff. Plus, I'm pretty sure those Angel Treees suggest $20 or so of gifts, not $5 worth of gifts.

The kid who gets 5-6 items from the Dollar Tree is going to be much happier than a kid who gets your scooter. Why not donate a Beanie Baby or a Ferby?
