My younger cousin enlisted in the Navy at 18. He is smart but didn’t do well in high school just because he was board and undisciplined with his work. He’s been in for eight years; will be getting out at ten. He thrived. Did college part time, and got his degree on Uncle Sam’s dime. Wants to get his masters. Learned a trade. He wanted to stay in for twenty but he says morale is now shot to shite and wants to get out when his time is done.
Another cousin of mine, back no the 90’s, did some juvenile misdemeanor shite. His old man talked him into joining the Army. Sorted him out. Did six years; did some time over in Kosovo during that mess back in 98-99. Got his degree, went to medical school, became a doctor and makes bank.

As a 24 year veteran.... I'd run from the military at the present time. No way I'd recommend. Can't do it.

Lineman School (Distribution or Transmission)

Air Force or nothing. Security Forces (Mall Cop) takes a very low ASVAB. Do not go Army or Marines. There's always the Air National Guard or USAFR.

I would talk him out of it if possible.
Just remember he’s in the governments hands when he signs up.
They own him. And they will willingly send him to die in a far away country using the lie that he did it for our freedom.
Hey, I was a sucker as well. Went to Iraq, saw combat. And the experience completely changed me. I didn’t find anyone’s freedom. All I did was help destroy other people’s country.

People study for the asvab?
That was my first thought.
It's 2024, and the world is steadily getting dumber. Just take the damn test....

How would you know which is more rewarding? Have you taken both paths?
Also, CO is the commonly used abbreviation for Commanding Officer, not Commissioned Officer.
This last part makes me wonder if you even know what the frick you're talking about?
Where did you attend OCS?
Add to that getting a 4 year degree and doing ROTC would avoid the need for OCS you would instead go to OBC*(officer basic course) for your branch.
*OBC is now called BOLC B basic officer leadership course, BOLC A is done in ROTC or OCS. I'm olde and have a hard time using all the newer acronyms, it is still NBC to me for example.

Chill dude...if your son has to study for asvab don't stress out over what is MOS oportunities will be. Let him get his feet wet with whatever the Lord has in store for him. After his military gig is over he can get educated on Uncle
Sam's dime. That way he will be more mature and possibly more understanding of just what he wants to pursue.
Who knows, he may like the military and make it a career. Something I regret not doing myself!
The only negative I see is being in uniform under this clown show of a president we have now. Other than that, be proud of your son for being a patriot.

"I scored the highest ASVAB score in my state"
Not saying you didn't, but either "in your County" or "in your State" is an old, well-known Recruiter's wive's tale (lie)

He’s a product of his generation. Nothing out of the ordinary compared to most of his contemporaries. Good luck!
More people go to college than ever before. Couple that with education and houses 3-4x inflation while salaries haven't caught up at all then it's harder today than ever was before to become 18. Have more respect.

Security Forces (Security Police) guard airplanes and fence lines. F that. The Law Enforcement side is way better. Patrol the streets and respond to parties in the dorms, like a real cop.
My nephew went against my advice and joined the Navy as a Corpsman. Got sent to the Sandbox twice and Guantanamo Bay. Never did get to see the Blue Side.
Worst of all, for some reason, his Navy medical training did not transfer equally to the civilian world.

Tough love is key! He will thank you later. I wish my parents did this 100%.

Suggest he goes to Trade School in your area and learn a trade.

This is the answer, Airforce or nothing.

That definitely doesn't appear to be the case!
When I was 17, I moved away from my parents. I no longer needed them to "wipe my arse" or "make a sandwich" literally or figuratively.
Based on that alone, it seems as if my parents did a far better job than you have done with your child.
Keep talking shite if it helps you deal with your insecurities but don't let the truth of the reality erode what little remaining confidence you have!
Perhaps your kids will find a father figure somewhere outside your home that they admire and respect?
Have a great day!

I took the asvab hungover
It’s not hard at all

Have him go coast guard
Instead of dod (although they can fall under the dod) he’ll be under the doj (drug busting is just as important)
