Getting a Book Published

How hard is it to write a novel and then get it published? Anyone go down this road? If so what book did you write and what was your experience getting it published?

Give up now. It will never happen.

just self publish it. many places you can do this.

I had a stupid friend that "wrote" a stupid book that was "going" to be published.
There was a company online that offered to review & edit then publish. The review & edit cost around 1000.00 IIRC & after needing a few of the reviews nothing happened.
Just make sure it isn't some kind of scam.

I wouldn't suggest getting your book published. I had a book published once and it was a huge hit at first, maybe you've read it...

That is the hard part and not sure anyone here has a clue if you can write a novel.

and then get it published?
That is the easy part.

Seems like these days it must be a whole lot easier to get published than it used to be. That being said, there is a lot of difference between getting published and getting published by a well known publisher.
I attend the Book Festival every fall down near the State Capitol. Lots of alleged authors who had book(lets) for sale.

If you google "publish your own book" it brings up lots of options

There are three different ways:
1. Self Publish, which has come a long way in being a respected form of publishing, if done properly. You would need to hire a good editor, a person to format your book, and a good artist for cover art. Prices can range from a few hundred dollars to thousands, but in the end you get all the profits from your book. I did a little zombie serial as a self publish experiment, and for me I didn't like it because I had to do everything, including marketing. It took time away from writing.
2. Small Press. Depending on the genre (like horror) there may be tons of small presses available. Do your research is the most important thing I can stress, as some are really good and others are bad. I have had experience with both, and there is nothing worse than writing a book and seeing it die with a small press. That said, I have worked with some really great small presses and they have made some beautiful books for me that I am happy to display at home and have been read by people all over the world. All my books have been published by small presses, which include paperback and a hardback.
3. Big Press - Almost impossible to get into with a literary agent, and even still that is no guarantee. I had a literary agent for about a year and she submitted a book of mine to about a dozen houses. The best I did was a particular publisher was interested if I rewrote the entire book and added another 100 pages.
So go from there and best of luck. Writing is a fun and therapeutic hobby!
Disclaimer Edit:
If someone wants you to pay money to publish your book, run the other way. It's a scam/
If someone won't pay you in royalties to publish your book, it's a scam.

If you're a nobody it's nearly impossible. You'll never make a penny.
The best thing these days is to self publish and self market. Just do small runs that you can afford and use the earnings to print more copies as you sell them.
Publishers aren't wasting time and money on books if you don't already have a built in fanbase.

Most self-published authors make less than $500 in a lifetime. There are people out there making big bucks but they are few and far between. I think the ones who do the best are the 50 shades types. It is pretty difficult to get a book published by a well-know publishing company. Best of luck.

My ex -sis in law did it. I think the print method was pretty pricey but doing an e-version not too too bad. For print, like anything else - the more volume you order the lower the price was.
Look for a service that helps you get e-books published.
PS - frick You for starting an advice thread then logging off. I hope you and your stupid book fail miserably.

by a legit publisher who'll give you an advance? even talented writers are lucky to get a legit agent.

Anyone go down this road?
I've been working with a writer for 10 years. he got a top-notch NYC agent and never got published with her. We went self-pub route and had great success. Then the author changed agents and ended up doing a mix of self-pub and publisher-pub. He is a great writer and VERY prolific. Gave up full-time profession to write every day.
If your goal is to have people read your work, then self-publish and learn how to self-market.

i have a cousin who has had several novels published. I never could understand how anyone has that much information floating around in their head.

I've been published twice in a monthly magazine with a circulation size of about 6000. First an essay, and later photography.
Good luck. Just a response, good or bad, is hard to get when submitting something for publishing with another entity.
