Would Scruffy agree that BP, heart rate and cholesterol is more important than BMI?

Snapshots that change depending on the time of day, what you've eaten, etc. They aren't really useful at all the way they are measured.

It's like using only driving accuracy as a stat in golf while ignoring the fact that you use a 7 iron of the tee leading to really long shots into the green. They're simple statistics that don't begin to tell the whole story

as long term indicators...nope. BF% is better than all of them along with steps in a day as indicators of all cause mortality

now the things you mentioned are very important but they are indivdual and are snap shots of current health and when looking at the populaiton as a whole, bmi and steps in a day are better predictors of long term health and where the indicators you mentioned will be long term.

They are all important concepts.

BMI should not be the all-defining factor, but it is an easily definable concept that is generally applicable to the VAST majority of individuals and research has shown a correlation between higher BMIs and negative medical outcomes.

Look, it isn’t perfect, but in an overly complex society, it is useable and functions quite well.

A system that tried to measure how fat someone is that doesn’t take into account waist size probably has some fricking flaws.

You don’t need BMI to know you’re fat.

I rarely eat over 1,000 calories a day. I don’t drink sodas and rarely eat anything fried. I almost exclusively drink ice water. I have one cup of decaf coffee each morning and I drink it black. I don’t eat sweets and I even limit the amount of fruit I eat due to their sugar content. When it comes to meat I almost exclusively stick with pan seared blackened tilapia, Mahi Mahi, flounder, and I occasionally catfish or tuna. When I do eat red meat, which is no more than once or twice a month, it’s always 96% lean ground beef and never more than 8 oz.

I’m severely limited on vegetables though because I cannot eat green leafy vegetables (due to being on Coumadin). So I eat a lot of baked squash, zucchini, onion, mushrooms, and radishes. I rarely eat things that are high in carbs like potatoes, beans, or rice.

I got those too, although i think the cheap equipment they used to measure BP was a little generous.

it’s ok - we all get caught up in trying to justify what we do - if it works for you, then that’s all that matters

What about sleep apnea that reasonably healthy people are diagnosed with?

I stay around 1,000 calories by my doctor’s recommendation. My organs took a lot of damage when I was in CHF. I went months with a heart that got down to 10% effectiveness before I got my artificial valve. That did a lot of damage to pretty much all my organs. If I ate what most people would call a healthy amount of food, I’d start gaining weight. I even have to limit my water intake somewhat to keep from retaining fluid.
