Georgia has reportedly taken thousands of people off food stamps — tagging them as “able bodied” and unemployed — as the Trump administration continues to crack down on the federally-funded program.

Nearly 8,000 residents lost their SNAP benefits between April and October, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. That’s a 20-fold increase from last year.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program requires recipients without children over the age of 18 to work at least 20 hours a week or go to school in order to be eligible for food stamps. Georgia officials have been using a new data management system — dubbed the “Georgia Gateway” — to help identify people who don’t qualify.

“We have more data elements available to us with this system than we have had with any of our other eligibility systems,” explained Jon Anderson, of the state’s Division of Family and Children Services, which handles SNAP.

quote:

“We are more confident in the system being able to identify ABAWDs [able-bodied adults without dependents] than we were in earlier systems,” he told AJC.

The Trump administration has been increasing the enforcement of the federal rules governing food stamps as of late. Roughly 71 percent of SNAP recipients are reportedly families with dependent children, and a third have loved ones who are elderly or disabled.

Many of the people who have been labeled ABAWDs, or able-bodied adults without dependents, say they have tried to find work but simply can’t — on account of their being no jobs available in their area.

“People who use SNAP who can work, do work,” said Alex Carmardelle, senior policy analyst at the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute. “If you are not working and you are receiving SNAP it’s because of a serious reason.”

Can we have a Halle-frickin-lujah!! Majority probably wanting a free handout where only a minority few deserve it! Please have this happen in Louisiana too!!

I’ve been living in that state for less than 6 months and I’m not sure I ever want to leave.

Take note Louisiana.

Nice. Especially since many immigrants come here, and instantly get on some kind of welfare. Build the wall, and close loopholes. True immigration reform. Need to stop the anchor baby deal, and that will truly stop it.

They need to stop connecting money to babies too. If you cant support 2 kids then instant tube tying and/or long term BC shot.

Also, if you are a fat arse on welfare then you need to lose weight. If your getting hand outs then you sign up for the govt to be up in your personal life in my opinion. If you dont want to stay off the "grid" then dont take handouts.

Problem is that many of these junk food snacks companies would see lower revenues since welfare is allowed to be used on junk.

There are a lot of liberals who post here. The downvoters are just mad their fellow democrat voters lost their food stamps and might have to get jobs.

FIFY. They don’t engage here, because they don’t have the echo chamber that they need for reinforcement.

Because some people actually need food stamps.

But without the details, how do we know if those 8000 need the food stamps or are grifters working the system?

It's not as if they abolished the program. They just removed some ineligible people. With government being involved, it's very much possible they hit some people with legitimate needs and missed some grifters. But food stamps are also not intended to be the sole means of obtaining food.

Not sure anyone denied that. The problem is that the group in the OP makes government aid dependence a lifestyle.

They have been doing this since April. The article appears on Christmas Eve. Probably just a coincidence.

Cutting some welfare costs and building a 15 billion dollar wall seem like opposing ideals when it comes to responsible government spending of tax payer money
